Come join the Metro Transit team! This is entry-level, routine manual and semi-skilled transit vehicle service work. Employees service, park, clean and assign transit vehicles. This work requires only limited discretion and is subject to close supervision.


Come join the Metro Transit team! This is entry-level, routine manual and semi-skilled transit vehicle service work. Employees service, park, clean and assign transit vehicles. This work requires only limited discretion and is subject to close supervision.

During the approximately 3-week training period, hours will be Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM. You need your Commercial Learner's Permit to start. During the initial 3 weeks, Metro will train you to get your full Commercial Driver's License. When training is finished, employees in this position work a 2nd shift schedule which could include weekends and holidays.

Employees could work out of 1 S. Ingersoll Street or 3829 Hanson Road. Shifts could include:
  • 3:00 PM to 1:30 AM
  • 4:00 PM to 12:30 AM
  • 4:00 PM to 2:30 AM (4-day week)

Employees may be eligible for loan forgiveness through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Position Duties

  • Check (and add) fuel, transmission fluid, oil, and water levels. Check tire pressure.
  • Drive buses to the service lane and clean exterior and interior (wash and vacuum). Clean lane area, and use floor scrubber.
  • Park buses according to run and time schedule. Assure that the required type and size of buses are available when scheduled. Complete parking sheet showing the location of buses, assigned run and schedule time (computer aided dispatching).
  • Start buses prior to scheduled run time.
  • Process equipment check cards.
  • Change exterior and interior advertising signs as needed.
  • Operate transit vehicles relative to maintenance activities. 
  • Change money vaults as needed.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

All applicants will be considered. Depending on the number of applications, random selection may be used to determine who will proceed to the interview process.

Successful applicants will have knowledge of:

  • Automotive-type equipment and preventative maintenance servicing.
  • Computer aided dispatching or other computer skills that would demonstrate the ability to learn the operations of computer aided dispatching.
  • Computers and ability to use computer software applicable to the duties of the position.

Other Qualifications

Licensing Requirements:

  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License 
  • Candidates must have their Commercial Learner's Permit, Class B, P endorsement, no "L" restriction by their start date. Metro will train you to earn your full Commercial Driver's License (CDL) during the training period. To continue employment, you must pass the CDL road test as part of training.

Physical Requirements:

Employees must have the ability to lift and carry objects (fuel hoses, cash vaults) weighing up to 30 pounds on a regular basis.  In addition, employees must be able to walk/stand for long periods, physically inspect buses, physically access the interior of the bus, and be able to work with arms raised above the head in order to physically change advertising signs on the interior of a bus.
