About the Department
Performs general civil engineering field and office work in a municipal environment that actively improves the community in which the candidate will work.
Position Duties
- Perform engineering design for municipal public works (either streets/drainage engineering, or water utilities engineering);
- Estimate construction costs for projects;
- Review construction plans for conformance to City codes and standards;
- Utilize software to oversee and manage the review and permitting process for land development activities;
- Evaluate problems directed through citizen’s complaints, city departments, city officials and/or personal observations, and coordinate the resolutions;
- Develop, implement, and monitor professional and construction service contracts;
- Inspect and test material used in construction;
- Inspect construction in progress and upon completion;
- Write construction specifications and assemble plans;
- Provide information to the public related to public works facilities;
- Provide assistance to developers, landowners, and real estate agencies on engineering issues related to subdivisions or property;
- Coordinate review process with building safety and other departments;
- Evaluate and review plans to ensure adequacy of design
- Reviews exhibits and descriptions for easements and rights of way acquisitions;
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule.
- Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field. No specific experience required if education qualifications are met; or any combination of education and experience which provides the following:
Valid Driver’s License
Other Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of civil engineering;
- Computer software for engineering applications such as Autocad and Esri ArcGIS;
- Methods and materials used in public works construction;
- Contract administration.
Ability to:
- Estimate costs for public works construction projects;
- Problem solve and communicate effectively with others in a team environment;
- Operate engineering related computer software;
- Attain and/or perform professional-level engineering duties.
Physical Requirements:
- Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.

- Occasionally push and pull objects.
- Occasionally rotate upper trunk to the right or left while sitting or standing.
