RECYCLING CENTER WORKER

General Definition of Work
Performs manual work in the sorting of recycling material; performs responsible skilled and manual tasks in operating and maintaining the City's Recycling Center.

An employee in this class is responsible for assisting in the continuous operations of the City's Recycling Center. Recyclable material is brought to the center by collection crews and by the public to be sorted and baled before shipment. The employee has some public contact in communicating operations to visitors and civic groups at the recycling center. When operating equipment, the work is performed in varying traffic conditions and requires the application of traffic and occupational safety measures. Employee is subjected to Level III OSHA Standards on Blood borne Pathogens. Work is performed under daily supervision by the Recycling Center Operator and regular supervision by the Sanitation Crew Supervisor and reviewed by observation and reports turned in.
Position Duties
Essential Functions
Sort recycling material by hand as material travels across a horizontal conveyor system.
Sort material based on type into different storage bunkers for mixed paper, plastic
milk/detergent jugs, plastic drink bottles, aluminum cans, steel cans, and glass containers.
Operates mini-excavator and other loading equipment in moving recycling material.
Empty containers collecting contamination, non-recyclable material, from sorting line into disposal dumpster.
Picking out cardboard from material loads dumped by collection truck and place in cardboard storage container.
Assist in baling activities, by monitoring and moving material going through baling conveying system and tying finished bales.
Some ground maintenance work, such as cutting grass and trimming around recycling facility.
Wash out used recycling and garbage carts in the cart inventory as they are collected from vacant houses.
Empty used motor oil and cooking oil into proper storage containers as it is collected from residential routes and delivered to recycling center.
Place electronics in proper storage location as delivered to recycling center.
Clean sorting area and baling area by sweeping, raking, washing, etc.
Requires manual lifting, bending, stooping, reaching, etc.
Assist with other duties in Sanitation Department as needed; and with promotion of the recycling program.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of recyclable materials; equipment used to compact items and applicable safety precautions; occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of garbage collection equipment; traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation. Ability to complete simple records; understand and follow written and oral instructions; communicate effectively with the general public and other employees.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
