About the Department
The City of Jersey City is seeking a laborer for the Division of Buildings and Streets in the Department of Public Works. This position will be responsible for performing varied types of cleaning services such as sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming City offices. Additionally, this candidate will be responsible for maintaining and restocking cleaning supplies.
Position Duties
Leads and works alongside a crew performing manual and unskilled labor, including street sweeping, loading, lifting, and moving supplies, furniture, and equipment, as well as loading and unloading trucks. Lifts and transports materials as required and may operate trucks.
Provides supervision and direction to staff performing tasks such as:
- Digging trenches and performing manual grading
- Cleaning incinerators
- Collecting rubbish and refuse
- Cutting grass and trimming hedges
- Watering lawns, flowers, and vegetable beds
- Shoveling snow, gravel, and sand
- Whitewashing walls
- Mixing cement and mortar
- Setting forms for concrete work
- Performing cold patching
- Clearing underbrush, foliage, vines, and weeds
- Cutting down trees and removing tree stumps
- Removing and destroying poisonous vines, weeds, and undergrowth
- Cleaning sludge beds
- Sweeping streets and sidewalks
- Cleaning sewers
- Demolishing sections of walls and roofs using hand tools
- Loading debris for removal
- Sorting, stacking, and cleaning salvageable brick, stone, lumber, and metal
May also:
- Operate construction and maintenance equipment
- Operate a pneumatic drill
- Rake and distribute asphalt mixtures to proper thickness and grade
- Patch pavement joints and edges with asphalt cement
- Tamp and smooth asphalt surfaces
- Operate and maintain an asphalt heating kettle
- Learn and perform routine repairs to valves, fittings, pipe sections, and other equipment within the assigned area
- Perform other duties as assigned

Preferred Education:
High School Diploma or GED.
Required Experience:
One (1) year of experience inperforming labor manual and unskilled labor work.
Required License:
Appointees must possess a possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the class and type of vehicle being operated.
Essential Skills:
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and process used to perform manual and unskilled labor tasks.
- Ability to function as a lead worker, guide the performance of laborers and review their work.
- Ability to prepare work schedules.
- Ability to obtain, store, safeguard and use needed equipment, materials and supplies.
- Ability to perform manual tasks either alone or as a member of a group.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for prolonged periods of time under varying temperatures and climatic conditions.
- Ability to use the tools and equipment needed to perform routine, unskilled tasks.
- Ability to follow safety precautions in the operation of assigned tools and equipment.
Other Qualifications
This is a Civil Service Job and you must eventually pass and qualify for the applicable Civil Service title.
