About the Department

Performs responsible professional work that assumes the responsibility of the operation of the City's public swimming pools by preventing and responding to emergencies. Responsible forthe complete operation and administration of the pool under general supervision.

Position Duties

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Responsible for scheduling lifeguards and gatekeepers to work at each pool.
  • Maintain effective customer relations, keep attendance records, revenue, maintenance, and other administrative matters related to pool maintenance.
  • Assists with inventory of all equipment and supplies and assures that equipment and supplies are handled responsibly.
  • Makes regular inspections of the pool and its equipment to insure that conditions are safe and sanitary for pool participants.
  • Assists with preparing reports for needed repairs and maintenance and notifies appropriate personnel.
  • Displays excellent customer service skills and provides leadership.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Principles and practices of public swim pool operations
  • Principles of organization and managementPublic Health regulations
  • Red Cross regulations
  • Safe work practices
  • Ability to perform water safety and lifesaving techniques
  • Supervise personnel in the facilitation of all programs
  • Must also be able to maintain control and handle emergency situations and dealeffectively and courteously with the public

Other Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Previous administrative experience
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain certification in CPR, AED and First Aid.
  • Incumbent must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, evenings and different shifts.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs light to medium work that involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The work may require specific physical characteristic and abilities such as heightened strength, mobility, dexterity and full range of motion. Use of hands, arms, and legs and other motor skills used for swimming skills.  Ability to sit and work long periods of time in varying degrees of weather.  The following additional physical abilities are also required: manual dexterity, hearing, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, talking, visual acuity and walking.  

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT):

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • The work is generally performed in inside and outside environmental conditions and extremely hot and cold temperatures.  Work involves administering first aid as necessary and is subject to the final standards of OSHA blood borne pathogens. Employee is subject to exposure to loud noise, bending, kneeling, walking on slippery surfaces, and squatting. Uses senses of vision, hearing and smell to diagnose problems.
