The Temporary Library Security Guard provides security for City facilities, enforces rules and regulations, and answer questions and provides information to the public.

Position Overview: This part-time position requires availability to work any day of the week, including weekends, evenings, and holidays. There are four open positions. 

  • Hours: 19+ hours per week, scheduled as needed
  • Hourly rate: $18.00 - $19.00
  • FLSA status:Non-exempt (eligible for overtime pay for hours worked over 40 per week)
  • Work locations:  2 positions at the Main Library, 1 position at Velma Teague Library and 1 position at Foothills Library
  • Sick Time: Accrues at .034 hours per-hour-paid




Position Duties

Essential Functions

  1. Provides security for the city library locations; enforces rules and regulations. 
  2. Assists the library staff in maintaining a safe and secure environment for service to the public and protecting the library’s materials and property.
  3. Enforces established rules and regulations and answers basic directional and information questions asked by the public.
  4. Patrols the library, parking areas, and grounds in designated areas to observe and act on unusual behavior and to prevent vandalism. 
  5. Observes activities at assigned locations and notifies the Police Department of any emergencies or suspicious activities.
  6. Investigates and resolves customer security related complaints.
  7. Operates portable radio and/or phone to maintain contact with library staff.
  8. Records and reports deficiencies related to the facilities assigned, such as safety hazards and security lighting.
  9. Receives and investigates security related complaints.
  10. Analyzes and reacts to emergency situations.
  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of experience as a security officer or police officer.

Knowledge of:

  • Security practices
  • Electronic security alarms and systems

Skill in:

  • Use of Analyzing and reacting to emergency situations

Ability to:

  • Handle encounters with irate or hostile individuals
  • Identify hazardous or unsafe conditions or behaviors
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the public
  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing

Special Requirements

  • May be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.

Extensive walking or sitting depending on assignment. Enters, exits, and operates city vehicles, depending on area of assignment. Exposure to varying weather conditions.  Occasionally may encounter hostile or irate persons.
