About the Department
Under general supervision, performs manual labor and semi-skilled work in the operation of trucks and equipment for a variety of job functions in the Public Works Department, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
Position Duties
The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
- Operates a variety of trucks and heavy equipment to perform job functions in the Public Works Department, in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Performs a variety of street and roadway construction, maintenance and repair tasks; drives a truck to collect, transport and dispose of refuse and trash; duties may vary according to job assignment.
- Repairs roads, spreads asphalt, seals cracks, repairs holes and maintains roads and roadways as directed; hauls materials, and transports vehicles and equipment to job sites.
- Constructs and paves roads and infrastructure; installs culverts, sidewalks, ramps, drainage controls, retaining walls and curbs; installs and replaces signs as needed.
- Operates hand and power tools; operates spray equipment for the application of weed control chemicals; mows roadway right-of-way, and trims and removes shrubs and trees.
- Performs traffic control activities as needed; follows safety regulations on all work zone and flagging sites, including placing barricades and cones.
- Loads and unloads trash disposal truck; collects and empties containers and Roll-Offs; performs proper disposal of hazardous waste and recyclable materials; performs duties of Gate Attendant as needed.
- Cleans and performs routine maintenance work on trucks and heavy equipment; identifies and reports mechanical problems requiring additional repair.
- Utilizes proper safety precautions in all work performed; reports safety hazards, traffic problems, equipment problems and emergency situations.
- Controls ongoing work projects to assure that safety rules and regulations are adhered to, and that the work zone and all equipment are in safe operating condition.
- Performs manual labor as needed in varying weather conditions.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the materials, methods, and practices used in road construction and maintenance.
- Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in road construction and trash disposal.
- Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Skill in performing street and roadway maintenance and repair work.
- Skill in operating and maintaining tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Skill in the use of power and hand tools.
- Skill in operating vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Skill in the safe and effective application of various toxic chemical sprays.
- Skill in following verbal and written instructions.
Other Qualifications
High School diploma or GED equivalent, AND two (2) year’s experience driving trucks and operating equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Shall have or obtain a valid State of Arizona Class B Commercial driver’s license permit within 6 months or hire AND obtain a permanent license within 12 months of hire; Tanker endorsement must be specific technical training; license endorsements and certifications may be required for some incumbents.
Location: Eloy Landfill
Work Schedule: Tuesday–Saturday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
