The library is seeking an adult services librarian who is passionate about connecting people, ideas, and community.  As a member of our 11-person Adult Services Division, you’ll work closely with others to provide service and resource recommendations using both print and digital tools. You’ll collaborate with our programming team to develop, facilitate, evaluate, and promote innovative programs designed to support lifelong learning. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in collection development and curate for the library's collection 

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication abilities, solid programming skills, and experience in collection development. They should be proficient with relevant technologies and hold a Master's in Library and Information Science or equivalent work experience.

Starting rate of pay is $28.24 per hour. This is an exempt full-time benefit-eligible position. Rotating evenings and weekends are required.

Job Description 

DEPARTMENT:  Library   
TITLE: Adult Services Librarian 
DIVISION: Adult Services  
REPORTS TO: Adult Services Manager
DATE: April 2026 
STATUS: Exempt 

SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Adult Services Manager, this position provides frontline support at the public services desks, offering reference assistance, reader’s advisory, and technology help to customers. This role helps to select, evaluate, and maintain library collections that reflect community needs and interests. This position also plans and implements engaging library programs that foster lifelong learning, creativity, and community connection.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school preferred. 
  • Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university or equivalent in training and proven work experience is required.
  • Two years of related library work experience. 
  • Course work in collection development preferred. 
  • One year of experience providing program planning and instruction is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency with standard Microsoft applications (including Office applications), MS Teams or other team collaborative platforms, integrated library systems, and online searching.
  • Understanding of the role of technology in providing library services and has enthusiasm for learning new technology-related skills. 
  • Quickly learns and adapts to a wide range of hardware and software, including A/V tools, computers, mobile devices, operating systems, and makerspace equipment. 
  • Applies advanced knowledge of library services and trends to create innovate, engaging programs.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication, public presentation, interpersonal, and customer service skills. 
  • Ability to stay organized and balance the multiple tasks and deadlines associated with the day-to-day services of the library.
  • Community-driven focus and enthusiasm for connecting and collaborating with community members and organizations.
  • Ability to react quickly and effectively to difficult or emergency situations.
  • Availability and flexibility to work day, evening, and weekend shifts as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Work Expectations
  • Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly public space within the library building and grounds.
  • Contributes to a positive, team-oriented work environment by being helpful, respectful, and approachable to both staff and the public.

Public Service Desk 
  • Provides advanced research based reference and information services to customers using print and digital resources, disseminates community information and referrals.
  • Offer reader’s advisory to help customers discover books, media, and online materials; submit requests for materials for within consortium and through interlibrary loan. 
  • Assist customers with basic technology needs, including computers, library apps, and databases. 
  • Responsible for division in absence of Adult Services Manager
  • Creates and maintains AS Assistant scheduling, including managing time off requests, schedule changes and timesheets, and schedules AS Team’s weekly desk schedule.
  • Assists AS manager with hiring, supervising, training, and evaluating AS Assistants. 
  • Participates in the day-to-day operations of multiple service points overseen by Adult Services, including the makerspace service desk.
  • Develops, maintains, and revises training materials and plans for staff and customers on relevant equipment and electronic resources, informs staff of updates or changes to equipment, electronic resources or procedures.
  • Proposes and develops digital literacy workshops and literacy programs for adults.

Collection Development
  • Selects and maintains areas of the adult print and non-print collections. 
  • Actively serves on the Collection Development Committee.
  • Works with marketing staff to promote library print and non-print collections.

Programming 
  • Plans and implements library programs, workshops, and classes by working closely with the community and colleagues.
  • Serves on the team that coordinates and implements programming and technology for the Dabble Box, the library’s multi-purpose makerspace.  Promotes the use of the makerspace and assists customers with the use of equipment.
  • Works collaboratively with marketing staff to promote and maintain communication of programs and services.

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following are nonessential functions for this position. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Serves on staff committees.
  • Serves on community committees as a library liaison. 
  • Participates in professional organizations and professional development activities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work involves frequent lifting and carrying of up to 10 pounds, and occasional lifting, carrying, and/or moving materials of 11–50 pounds. Work varies between sedentary (sitting) and frequent walking and standing. Occasional bending, squatting, twisting, and reaching motions are required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Must be able to read, write, give, follow, and comprehend verbal and written instructions. Must have effective oral and written communication skills to communicate productively with staff and customers.
