Fitness Center Hours:
Weekdays: 6:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Saturday: 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Sunday: 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Under the direction of the Fitness Center Supervisor, our Lifeguard/Instructor team plays a vital role in program delivery, pool supervision, and emergency preparedness. Whether you're teaching beginners their first strokes or ensuring safety during open swim, your work here truly matters.
The lifeguard/instructor oversees the conduct of patrons of the pool facilities, in order to provide a safe environment for all program participants.
Position Duties
The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
- Maintains a constant watch over patrons.
- Performs lifesaving techniques as needed.
- Enforces and follows all rules, regulations, and policies of the City of Duarte.
- Renders basic life support when necessary.
- Completes required reports and forms.
- Assumes assigned maintenance duties.
- Conducts swim classes.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Principals and practices of water safety, rescue methods, lifesaving techniques, and first aid as applied to accidents in the water and surrounding pool areas.
- Techniques and methods of swimming instruction for all age groups.
- Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
- Functions, policies, and procedures of relevant departments and/or operations.
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Skill and Ability to: - Understand and follow direction, oral and written.
- Interpret and apply department policies and procedures.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and all levels of staff and management.
- Work independently, without direct supervision.
- Cooperatively work with fellow employees, children, and the public
Other Qualifications
Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities could be considered qualifying.
Applicants must be at least 17 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities could be considered qualifying. Experience as a lifeguard is preferred. Must possess and submit photocopies with application; American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certification and Water Safety Instructor (W.S.I.) Certification.
May be required to have valid California driver's license.
