About the Department

The City of Davis Parks & Community Services Department offers a recreational program at the DSHS North Gym for participants who enjoy playing badminton, basketball, volleyball, and other various activities. The Open Gym Attendant position is responsible for ensuring a safe, healthy, structured, and comfortable environment for all participants. This position is responsible for opening the gym, set-up, take down, cleaning of the gym once the program has concluded, and receiving/submitting entry payments.

Must be available to work Saturdays between the hours of 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m.

Position Duties

Responsibilities: 
  • Opening facility at the start of the program and locking the facility at the conclusion.
  • Cash handling of entry payments.
  • Set-up and take down of equipment each day.
  • Inspection/cleaning of facility at the end of the program.
  • Communicates with supervisory program staff regarding participant behavior, injuries, and other relevant matters.
  • Assures that all equipment and facilities are safely and properly prepared and maintained.
  • Keeps work environments clean and organized.
  • Renders routine first aid for minor injuries.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Ability to demonstrate energy, common sense, and supervisory skills.
  • Having knowledge of recreation activities, behavior management practices and community resources is desirable.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with other program staff and community members.
  • Certified in CPR and Standard First Aid.
  • Having related experience working with the public is highly desirable.

Physical/Sensory Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This is an active position requiring the ability to move about on foot, walking and running with frequent starts and stops; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with children and other staff; visual acuity to oversee projects and make observations. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; run; use hand, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Staff are required to follow current health guidelines and requirements to keep all staff and participants safe. Work is done both indoors and out, with exposure to varying temperatures, sun, noise, dust, pollens and slip hazards when near water. Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid. Must be able to complete additional trainings, including but not limited to: Concussion Training, Blood Borne Pathogens, Mandated Reporter, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination.
