About the Department
Performs general police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Provides additional volunteer sworn police personnel to assist full-time officers during routine and emergency operations. As part-time officer, with or without compensation, will have all the authority and police powers as vested in them by the laws of the State of Florida and as granted by the CJSTC of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Responsible for the protection and detection of crime and the enforcement of penal, criminal, traffic, and highway laws of the State. This position will serve at the will of the Chief of Police.
Position Duties
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.
Enforce laws ordinances of the City, County and State. Makes arrests and bookings. Gives depositions and court testimonies.
Patrols an assigned area on foot or by vehicle. Performs patrol activities, to include pursuing and apprehending subjects, conducting felony stops, conducting teletype checks, controlling disorderly persons, transporting subjects and prisoners, searching for wanted persons, conducting dwelling and ground checks.
Conducts investigations, to include crime scenes, deaths, abuse cases, domestic violence, traffic accidents, animal calls and non-police action calls. Collects, disposes and secures evidence. Writes reports and processes paperwork.
Performs traffic activities, to include issuing citations, directing traffic, investigating driving under the influence incidents and arranging for the removal of vehicles.
Responds to rescue calls. Responds to emergency situations, to include controlling riots and directing evacuations. Performs first aid duties.
Operates and maintains police vehicles and equipment as required, to include motorized vehicles, bicycles, firearms, radio transmitters, fire extinguisher, protective equipment, intoxilyzer instruments, camera, fingerprint equipment and computers.
Performs special assignments as directed; to include City-sponsored functions and routine and emergency operations.
Serve a minimum of sixteen (16) hours quarterly.
Performs other related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent. Graduation from the United States Armed Forces Institute (USAFI) is acceptable when accompanied by a transcript of grades. Out-of-State GED or the USAFI equivalency must be acceptable by the State of Florida Police Standards Council.
Florida Certified Police applicants must have a State of Florida Basic Law Enforcement Certification in good standing .
Applicants should not be separated from a law enforcement agency for more than eight (8) years; four (4) years or less is preferred.
Must pass the State Officer Certification Exam (SOCE).
Valid Florida Driver’s license with good driving record.
Other General Requirements
Be of good moral character with no felony or misdemeanor convictions involving “moral turpitude” and pass an in-depth background investigation.
Pass a physical agility test, a credit check, polygraph test, psychological test, medical examination and oral interview.
Meet vision requirements: Binocular and monocular vision of 20/100 uncorrected and 20/30 or better corrected. Must have color vision.
Be a United States Citizen.
Be at least 21 years of age.
