About the Department
Under direction, is responsible for supervising the work of employees performing skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work on a diversified fleet of cars, trucks, and other similar equipment; performs related duties as required.
Position Duties

Supervises employees performing skilled mechanical repair and maintenance work on diversified motor vehicles and heavy equipment, to include performance appraisals, leave requests, and initiating disciplinary recommendations;
Plans the flow of work within the crew and makes general and detailed assignments to subordinates;
Oversees activity on the repair floor and ensures a smooth shift transition;
Inspects, tests, and road checks equipment to determine the nature of defects and failures and as a review of the work of mechanics and service workers;
Supervises the maintenance of records of work performed and prepares reports of repair work undertaken and completed;
Trains and ensures employees follow proper work and safety procedures, equipment usage, and operating procedures;
Uses computer software applications as a diagnostic tool;
Operates a computer to initiate and update work orders and complete reports;
Communicates daily with customers regarding automotive/truck servicing needs;
Requisitions repair parts, fuel, lubricants, supplies, and equipment; maintains parts inventory;
Instructs mechanic when unusually difficult mechanical repair problems arise;
Estimates cost of repair work;
May visit the scene of accidents involving City equipment to determine the cause and extent of damage and, where it seems desirable, secures estimates on repair jobs from dealers and operators of privately owned shops.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of the twelfth school grade and two (2) years of experience supervising automotive mechanics. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of a diploma.
Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Some positions may require possession of a valid Class A commercial driver’s license allowing the operation of vehicles with air brakes by the completion of the probationary period.

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list for this classification. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. The examination process will consist of a multiple-choice exam weighted 70% covering Supervision, Reading Comprehension, Problem Sensitivity, Logic and Reasoning, Mechanical Repair, Safety, Manual Parts Look-Up, and Microsoft Outlook 2016/2019; and a Training and Experience Evaluation weighted 30%.
The exam is expected to be administered in June 2026. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.
All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidate's name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
