Position Overview
The 911 Dispatcher serves as the critical communication link between the public and emergency response agencies. This role receives and transmits emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatches appropriate services, and provides vital information to police, fire, and medical personnel. Dispatchers must remain calm, focused, and accurate in high-pressure situations while maintaining detailed records and ensuring the security of the communications facility.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Emergency call handling — Receive and process all incoming emergency and non-emergency calls; gather essential information quickly and accurately.

Radio communication — Provide real-time information to law enforcement and emergency responders using direct radio channels.

Database queries — Access computerized systems to retrieve criminal histories, warrants, vehicle registrations, driver’s license status, and related data.

Dispatch coordination — Deploy police, fire, EMS, and other services as appropriate.

Information relay — Communicate descriptions and critical details to field units regarding wanted persons, disturbances, accidents, and emergencies.

Recordkeeping — Maintain logs, recordings, and copies of reports with accuracy and confidentiality.

Public and business contact — Notify businesses and homeowners as needed; update emergency contact lists; monitor alarms.

Towing coordination — Arrange and track towing services.

Facility security monitoring — Oversee video screens and electronic access for city hall, lobby, community center, parking areas, and garage.

Work area maintenance — Maintain cleanliness and organization of the dispatch area.

Emergency staffing — Work flexible hours, including short-notice shifts, to ensure 24/7 coverage.
Additional duties may be assigned, including City-directed tasks during declared emergencies.
Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience in customer service, emergency services, or related fields preferred.

Basic clerical skills: typing, filing, and use of standard office equipment.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Licenses & Certifications

Valid Tennessee driver’s license (or ability to obtain by hire date).

NCIC Training & Query Certification within 2 weeks of hire.

NCIC Basic Certification within 3 months of hire.
Physical Requirements

Vision correctable to 20/20; hearing correctable to 15/15.

Constant: sitting, typing, speaking, listening, hand/arm use.

Occasional: standing, walking, kneeling, stooping, bending, reaching overhead, lifting up to 25 lbs.
