The City of Carson is now accepting applications for Recreation Assistant II (Summer Day Camp) positions.

The City of Carson is excited to announce that applications are now open for the 2026 Summer Day Camp Program! 


We are seeking to fill 40 part-time Recreation Assistant II (Summer Day Camp) positions. Selected candidates may begin work as early as May 1, 2026, depending on placement and program needs. The Summer Day Camp season runs through August 7, 2026, and camps operate Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with daily shifts ranging from 4-7 hours based on program needs.


These positions are part-time/temporary, at-will (FLSA: Non-Exempt) positions that are limited to a maximum of 960 hours per fiscal year. Part-time employees are not typically eligible for benefits, however, they may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions.



ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

Do you enjoy working with kids and creating unforgettable experiences? Join our Summer Day Camp Program, a fun filled childcare program offered by the City of Carson to help support parents with childcare needs during the summer months. This program provides children ages 5-12 with exciting activities such as games, crafts, sports, indoor & outdoor play, and special excursions to theme parks like Knott's Berry Farm and water parks. Help us make this summer unforgettable!

What You'll Do:

  • Lead and supervise groups of campers ages 5-12 throughout daily activities
  • Facilitate games, arts and crafts, sports, and themed programs
  • Ensure camper safety by following all camp policies and procedures
  • Assist with setup, cleanup, and general camp operations as needed
  • Training and orientation will be provided to ensure you feel confident and prepared for the role

What Makes an Ideal Candidate:

  • High energy, positive attitude, and a genuine love for working with kids
  • Effective communication and leadership skills
  • Patience, adaptability, and ability to stay calm under pressure
  • Experience in childcare, coaching, tutoring, mentoring, or youth programs
  • Skills in sports, arts, music, STEM, or outdoor recreation
  • 18 years or older
  • Ability to work the full camp season and attend mandatory staff training
  • Comfortable being active outdoors for extended periods
  • Knowledge of sports, games, group activities; first aid and safety

Position Duties

Under general supervision, lead and supervise recreational programs, free play and special activities for various age groups on a seasonal basis; and to perform related duties as required.

(These functions are representative and may not be present in all positions in the class.  Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind related duties and work assignments.)

  1. Leads free play and team activities for various age groups.
  2. Teaches fundamentals of play and sportsmanship in recreational activities on a seasonal basis.
  3. Explains, demonstrates and assists in supervising new and original games.
  4. Assists in supervising special non-athletic events and programs such as contests, dances, special activity days, various meets and tournaments and special excursions.
  5. Assists in administering first aid.
  6. May be assigned duties as a sports official on urgency basis.

Minimum Qualifications

A typical way to obtain the requisite qualifications to perform the duties of this class is as follows:
 
Education and/or Experience:
Completion of formal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance and approximately one (1) year of part-time leadership experience in recreational activities.
 
Knowledge of:
  • Sports, games and groups activities; first aid and safety.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Organize the activities of groups using recreational facilities.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Other Qualifications

Employee accommodations for physical or mental disabilities will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Positions in this class normally:
  • Stand, stoop, reach and bend.
  • Require mobility of arms to reach and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
  • Require to perform work, which involves frequent lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects, which may be approximately 40 pounds and may occasionally weigh up to 60 pounds.
