About the Department
An incumbent to a position in this class is responsible for the repair and cleaning of water service boxes and fire hydrants. This is considered semi-skilled maintenance work involving no plumbing experience and the repair work is not difficult or complex in nature. Work is performed under immediate supervision of the Assistant Water Distribution Superintendent or Caulker Supervisor I and work reports are submitted daily. Unusual problems are referred to a supervisor. This position has no supervisory responsibility.
Position Duties
Inspects, cleans and repairs water service boxes;
- may be required to dig and replace top-half portion defective water service boxes;
Records locations of boxes in relation to distance from houses;
Shuts off and turns on water services;
Checks and pumps out fire hydrants during the winter months to prevent freezing;
Greases and packs fire hydrants;
- flushes hydrants and performs minor repairs to same;
- performs leak detection;
May be required to shovel snow, cut grass and weeds near and around fire hydrants;
Replaces broken or missing valve box covers;
In an emergency, places precautionary equipment around excavations and traffic hazards;
Maintains daily records of field work performed and material labor and equipment used;
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Promotional
(A) Continuous and permanent status in the Department of Public Works, Parks & Streets as a Laborer in the competitive class for one year;
Or
(B) Continuous and permanent status in the Department of Public Works, Parks & Streets as a Laborer I, Laborer II or Street Worker in the non-competitive class for two years.
Open Competitive
Applicants must have at least six months of full-time manual labor work experience.
Special Requirement for both Promotional and Open Competitive
Possession of a current New York State Drivers License that must be presented at time of appointment and maintained during employment.

Other Qualifications
Working knowledge of the construction, repair and servicing of fire hydrants and water service boxes;
Mechanical aptitude;
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Ability to withstand heavy labor work for extended periods of time;
Ability to work under adverse weather conditions;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
