About the Department
An incumbent of a position in this class has responsible charge for the installation and maintenance of water meters. A position in this class involves responsiblility for the accurate repair, maintenance and calibration of water meters that serve as a basis for consumer billing. Under general supervision, incumbents are permitted considerable leeway for planning the details of each assignment. Supervision is exercised over the Water Meter Mechanic and Water Meter Mechanic Helpers. Does related work as required.
Position Duties
Supervises the installation, maintenance, calibration and testing of water meters; Assigns tasks to water meter mechanics and determines priority of work orders; Directs when meters are to be changed to comply with American Water Works Association’s standards; Requisitions meter parts and tools; Maintains inventory of all meters and meter parts; Confers with plant personnel, plumbers and homeowners on matters pertaining to meter installations and settles complaints; Maintains records and reports of inspections of meters and repair costs.
Minimum Qualifications
Promotional Continuous and Permanent status in the Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets as a Water Meter Mechanic or Water Meter Tester for one year.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Thorough knowledge of the elementary principles of hydraulics as related to water flow measurements; thorough knowledge of the design, construction, installation and maintenance of water meter mechanisms; thorough knowledge of the tools, terminology and practices in the repair and maintenance of water meter mechanisms; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to lay out and supervise the work of others; skill in the operation of power drive mechine tools; mechanical aptitude; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
