About the Department
An incumbent to a position in this class repairs, maintains and installs water meters. The Water Meter Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and repair of water meters in the shop and installation of new meters in the field. All meters are checked as to performance upon completion of the repair work. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Water Meter Mechanic Supervisor I. Supervision is exercised over Water Meter Mechanic Helpers.
Position Duties
Repairs defective water meters in the shop;
Installs, maintains, changes and tests water meters;
Checks meter performance in field for excess consumption on retarded registration as indicated on meter readers' reports or customers' complaints;
Turns meters supplies on and off;
Operates small utility truck in performance on assigned tasks;
Locates leaks in buildings; Completes daily reports of work performed;
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Promotional
Continuous and permanent status in the Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets as a Water Meter Mechanic Helper for one year.
Open Competitive
(A) Graduation from High School, GED or Equivalency Diploma in Machine Shop curriculum;
OR
(B) One year of full time experience as a helper to a mechanic or a machinist in the repair of small parts mechanisms;
Special Requirement for both Promotional and Open Competitive
Possession of a current NYS Drivers License which must be presented at time of appointment and maintained during employment.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet the full time experience requirement.
Proof of education must be presented at time of appointment.

Other Qualifications
Good knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of small parts mechanisms;
Ability to dismantle and assemble water meters;
Ability to determine when to repair or replace water meters; Ability to read water meters; Ability to follow oral and written directions; Ability to fill out reports; Mechanical Aptitude; Good hand, eye and motor coordination;
Ability to work under adverse weather conditions;
Physical conditions commensurate with the demands of the position.
