About the Department

The City of Bell Gardens is seeking highly motivated and public service-oriented individuals for the position of Recreation Leader I and Recreation Leader IIThis part-time position is temporary, at-will employment. Mandatory Staff Training: Friday, June 5, 2026 from 3pm-9pm.

RECREATION & COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT
The City of Bell Gardens Recreation & Community Services Department's vision is to create community through people, parks, and programs. Our focus is to provide a safe and fun learning environment for the residents of Bell Gardens to enjoy. Our department is led by a diverse and knowledgeable staff that truly loves recreation and giving back to the community they serve.

PROGRAMS 
Areas of work may include Senior Services, Community Services, Youth Services, Sports, Aquatics, Fitness Room, Gold Course, Adaptive Recreation Programs, Special events and Media, After School Programs and Department Administration.

SCHEDULE 
20 to 28 hours per week. Individuals in these positions should be available to work a varying schedule of hours which includes mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

RECREATION LEADER I
Wage: $16.90/Hourly
MINIMUM & DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older at the time of application and in the eleventh grade or higher.  
  • Experience working with children of all ages in a group setting is preferred. 
  • Some direct experience in leadership, volunteer work, or recreation activities is highly desirable.

RECREATION LEADER II
Wage: $17.53-$18.40/Hourly
MINIMUM & DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older at the time of application and in the eleventh grade or higher.  
  • Experience working with children of all ages in a group setting is preferred. 
  • At least six (6 months) of experience in leadership, volunteer work, or recreation activities is required.

All students under the age of 18, who have not completed their high school graduation requirement must submit a valid Work Permit. 

Position Duties

DUTIES  
Assist in implementing of recreation programs and activities, including games, sports, and tournaments; assists in a variety of tasks including moving and setting up equipment; may work as a scorekeeper or youth sports official, may also work with seniors, children, as a day camp leader, and after school program leader; will prepare and maintain accurate written reports and records; assist with the care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies; clerical tasks; schedule and monitor equipment use; assist with City events; fitness room monitoring, aquatic center front desk operation assistance, Gold Course check in and office operations; assist in field and park maintenance and other duties as assigned; will display courteous and professional behavior toward the public and staff; observes and enforces all City safety rules and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Basic objectives, methods, and techniques of planned recreation: sports, games, and group activities; recreational activities suitable for children and seniors; safety practices; knowledge of the equipment facilities, operations, and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program.  Organize and supervise the activities of groups using recreational facilities; conduct recreational activities; keep simple records and prepare reports and notices; establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships; team oriented; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. The ability to speak Spanish is highly desirable.
