The purpose of this position is to ensure that the City's computer system is operating properly. This is accomplished by supervising and participating in the maintenance of the City's software and hardware applications. Other duties may include providing advance network and desktop computer support, providing customer service, and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position provides occasional direction to other employees.

Position Duties

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Provides advanced network and desktop computer support by installing new or existing applications, loading operating systems and required applications onto desktop computers for new and current employees, performing upgrades and software patches as necessary, troubleshooting network, desktop computer, and system problems, and making necessary repairs.
  • Maintains software and hardware by troubleshooting, patching and reloading software, researching and upgrading software patches, planning projects involved in upgrades and maintenance, and repairing and replacing broken or defective mechanical and electrical hardware such as computers, peripherals, and cabling.
  • Provides advanced help with desktop applications by working with customers in troubleshooting situations to help them achieve their goals.
  • Provides customer service by training computer users, instructing users on computer operating system applications, data management, email, graphics, and computer resource management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Associate's degree in a related field and one (1) year of relevant experience, or equivalent.
Certification and Other Requirements 
  • Valid Class C Driver's License

Supervision Exercised:
Work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; autonomy is granted at the service or program level; work is subject to general and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Overall Physical Strength Demands
Standard office environment.; Ability to sit or stand for long periods.; Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, and climb.; Ability to operate city or personal vehicle for business purposes.

Other Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • City rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Customer service and support practices, concepts, and standards used for providing end user support of technical solutions to a wide variety of teammates, users, and customers.
  • Personal computers, including hardware and software and related peripheral equipment.
  • Active Directory structure and functions.
  • Microsoft Windows operating systems.
  • Project management methods and techniques.
  • Modem office practices, procedures, and equipment.

Skill in:

  • Establishing and maintaining working relationships with elected officials, professional and support staff, vendors, the public, and City employees.
  • Providing outstanding customer service and conflict resolution.
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting information technology solutions, reading, interpreting, and applying detailed and technical instructions.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software.
  • Creating, preparing, writing, and proofing reports, documents, and correspondence.
  • Working effectively in a high-pressure environment with changing priorities.
  • Effectively communicating in both oral and written format.
