The Alexandria Sheriff's Office is currently seeking a qualified and experienced Human Resources Manager. This key leadership position, under general supervision, is responsible for planning, directing, and managing all recruitment, selection, and promotional activities for both sworn and civilian roles within the Office. The Human Resources Manager ensures departmental compliance with all applicable city, state, and federal regulations, with a focus on equal employment opportunity (EEO) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The position provides strategic guidance to department managers on leave and benefits in collaboration with the City's Human Resources Department. Additionally, the role oversees the department's payroll administration, leave management, and attendance tracking functions. The preferred candidate will demonstrate the ability to think critically, anticipate questions or challenges, respond appropriately, and lead a team proactively and efficiently. What You Should Bring The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in human resources administration, including accepted methods and best practices related to recruitment, selection, and promotional processes. They should demonstrate experience in employee relations, performance management, as well as a working knowledge of relevant federal, state, city, and departmental regulations. Candidates should be adept in the use of automated HR systems and capable of interpreting and applying labor law, recruitment practices, and benefit policies. Strong decision-making skills and the ability to resolve personnel issues efficiently are essential. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written are required, as is the ability to work with discretion, maintain confidentiality, and offer sound advice to employees across all levels. The successful candidate should be self-directed, capable of managing responsibilities independently, and proficient in producing clear, concise reports and documentation. The Opportunity – Examples of Work Supervise and manage the daily operations of the Human Resources Section, including overseeing two human resources technicians and two civilian background investigators. Screen, review, and manage deputy sheriff applicant tracking through an application database, ensuring data accuracy and timely processing. Coordinate and oversee deputy sheriff assessment schedules, providing staff support as needed. Manage job postings and recruitment activities for vacant positions, including oversight of the NEOGOV applicant tracking system. Administer employee onboarding and maintain accurate personnel records in the MUNIS HRIS system, including processing salary adjustments, transfers, promotions, demotions, resignations, and retirements. Oversee and process FMLA requests, collaborating with the Department of Human Resources Leave Coordinator to ensure proper processing. Administer and oversee the Police Benevolent Fund, ensuring compliance with regulations and maintaining accurate records. Review and process tuition assistance requests by established guidelines. Manage and monitor the performance evaluation process to ensure timely and accurate merit processing. Review and manage vacant and assigned position numbers, ensuring accurate classification of new hires. Obtain Virginia Notary Commission within 90 days of hire date.
