Make an impact in the community by joining the Utilities Team. The Distribution and Collections Division work to ensure all residents of Broomfield have access to clean water and proper collection of storm and sewer water by maintaining the water distribution system, the wastewater & stormwater collection system, and the reuse system. 

The Cross Connection & Control Technician, under the general direction of the Cross Connection & Control Foreman, performs professional duties relating to the Cross Connection Control program. The Cross Connection Control Technician is responsible for implementing comprehensive programs in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, conducting risk assessments to identify potential hazards, and ensuring accurate record-keeping of backflow prevention devices and inspection results. Additionally, the Cross Connection & Control Technician investigates water quality complaints, assists in preparing reports for regulatory agencies and management, creates public education materials, enforces program policies and procedures.


Total Compensation Package

Salary Range: $31.92 - $43.18/hour

Position Duties

  • Works directly with the Foreman in the daily oversight, planning, and implementation of backflow program operations. Ensuring assigned functions are efficient and cost effective.  

  • Responsible for managing data for tracking assemblies, maintains online records of permits, inspections, violations, application sites, and related processes. 

  • Maintains online records for permits, inspections, and violations, and compiles required reports and documentation for appropriate federal, state and and regulatory agencies, including the CDPHE.

  • Performs planned field inspections and surveys related to backflow prevention, cross connections and water pollution. Inspects piping in commercial and industrial buildings, hospitals, multi-family residential units and restaurants for compliance with ordinances pertaining to backflow prevention, cross connection and water pollution matters.

  • Advises property owners, plant managers, and maintenance engineers of corrections for compliance with appropriate ordinances.

  • Conducts on-site follow-up with commercial/industrial properties.

  • Maintains awareness of federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the Utility  programs, including water distribution, backflow/cross connection, water quality, and other applicable environmental regulations as assigned.

  • Ensures that written Standard Operating Procedures are current and in compliance with regulatory requirements

  • Advises the Foreman, Manager, Superintendent and applicable administrators of potential problems or concerns.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma/GED - required

Experience

  • 3 years of progressively responsible experience in utility maintenance, construction, and inspection, including experience in cross-connection inspections

Years of related experience may be substituted for required education, however education cannot be substituted for the necessary work experience. Candidates must meet the minimum required years of work experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be at least 18 years of age.  Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record for continued employment. New hires must, as a condition of employment, pass the following pre-offer and post-offer/hire processes: in-person or virtual interviews, reference checks, background checks including local police check and sex-offender registry, and DMV check.


Division Area Certifications: 


  • Required upon hire:

  • Backflow Tester/Repair Certification from ASSE or ABPA

  • State of Colorado Class 1 Water Distribution Certification

  • Preferred:

    • State of Colorado Class 2 Water Distribution Certification

Other Qualifications

  • Work is generally scheduled Monday through Friday with some weekend and holiday work required.

  • Position also involves on-call duty which requires working weekends on a rotating basis and working all hours during emergency repairs as needed. 

  • Attend meetings as assigned during evening hours.

  • Required to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

  • Physical demands are described as medium (exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects).

  • Required to talk or hear; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; bend or twist from the upper body; use hands and/or feet to perform manual tasks such as digging; push or pull; reach with hands and arms; squat; stoop; crouch; and climb or balance.

  • Tasks may require sitting at a computer for several hours.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, the ability to adjust focus, color vision, and peripheral vision.

  • Travel by automobile is required.

  • Requires indoor and outdoor activities

  • Work in conditions of extreme heat and cold

  • Work in trenches or excavations

  • Work around offensive odors

  • Primarily field-based with office duties
