Role Overview
The China Technology & Emerging Tech Research Intern will track China's technology ecosystem and its strategic applications — from dual-use technology and digital infrastructure to cyber capabilities and emerging-tech policy. Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting literature reviews, tracking developments in sectors such as AI, cybersecurity, semiconductors, and digital infrastructure, and compiling data and insights into structured research notes. The intern will assist in preparing briefings, reports, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders, while contributing to ongoing research projects and timelines. This is a full-time, remote role requiring close collaboration with the research team, participation in meetings, and engagement with relevant policy and academic resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and analyse developments in Chinese dual-use and emerging technologies (AI, semiconductors, space, cyber, telecom infrastructure)
- Track state-linked technology transfer, infiltration, and industrial espionage patterns relevant to global tech competition
- Research China's digital/cyber posture, including activity affecting critical infrastructure abroad
- Contribute structured, source-verified briefs and case studies for ANS publications
- Support ongoing research projects with literature reviews, data compilation, and analytical drafting
Qualifications
- Candidates should possess strong analytical skills, including the ability to synthesize complex information and draw evidence-based conclusions.
- Candidates should possess solid research skills, such as conducting literature reviews, using academic and policy databases, and organizing data systematically.
- Candidates should possess effective communication skills, including clear written reporting and the ability to present findings concisely.
- Candidates should possess foundational information technology skills relevant to technology-focused research, such as familiarity with digital tools, data sources, and basic tech concepts.
- Candidates should possess project management skills, including task prioritization, meeting deadlines, and coordinating with team members.
- Beneficial qualifications include coursework or interest in international relations, China studies, public policy, strategic studies, or technology policy.
- Additional desirable skills include proficiency with productivity and research tools (e.g., spreadsheets, citation managers), attention to detail, and a demonstrated interest in emerging technologies and geopolitics.
Mentorship
Selected interns will be mentored directly by Anushruti Narang, OSINT & Geopolitical Research Analyst at ANS. Her background spans a Political Affairs internship at UN Headquarters (DPPA, Asia-Pacific Division), a Master's in International Politics & East Asia from the University of Warwick, and analyst roles spanning Indo-Pacific strategy, PLA studies, and Maritime Domain Awareness — including OSINT/GEOINT database and AI-crawler development at a geospatial intelligence firm. Interns will receive hands-on guidance on source verification, structured analytical writing, and research design from someone who has worked across military, academic, and private-sector intelligence environments.
