Job Description: Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Location: Andheri (east), Mumbai
Reporting To: Founder / CEO
Role Overview
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will be responsible for driving operational excellence, regulatory compliance, revenue scalability, and technological efficiency across the stock broking business. The role requires deep expertise in Indian capital markets, brokerage operations, and regulatory frameworks governed by Securities and Exchange Board of India, National Stock Exchange of India, BSE Limited, and Multi Commodity Exchange of India.
The COO will oversee trading operations, risk management, compliance, client servicing, technology coordination, vendor management, and process automation while ensuring sustainable business growth.
Key Responsibilities
1. Regulatory & Compliance Oversight
- Ensure full compliance with SEBI, NSE, BSE, MCX regulations.
- Supervise Internal Audit, Compliance Officer, and Principal Officer functions.
- Oversee:
- Client onboarding (KYC/CKYC/AML)
- PMLA compliance
- Investor grievance redressal
- Exchange inspections & audits
- Liaise with regulators, exchanges, and depositories.
2. Brokerage Operations Management
- Manage:
- Equity, F&O, Currency, Commodity desks
- RMS (Risk Management System)
- Margin monitoring & collateral management
- Settlement & clearing operations
- Ensure smooth integration with clearing corporations.
- Monitor daily exposure, VAR, MTM risks.
3. Risk Management & Capital Control
- Define internal risk framework.
- Set leverage norms and margin policies.
- Monitor:
- Proprietary exposure
- Client exposure concentration
- Broker net worth compliance
- Ensure capital adequacy requirements are maintained at all times.
4. Revenue & Business Scalability
- Drive:
- Active client acquisition efficiency
- Cross-selling (MFD, PMS, AIF, insurance, bonds)
- Monitor:
- Client activation ratios
- Cost-to-income ratio
- Brokerage yield per segment
- Build scalable franchise/partner model if applicable.
5. Technology & Automation
- Work closely with CTO/Tech vendors.
- Oversee:
- OMS/RMS stability
- API trading systems
- Algo integrations
- Back-office automation
- Improve operational efficiency using AI/automation tools.
- Reduce manual dependency in reconciliation & compliance.
6. Client Experience & Service
- Establish structured client servicing hierarchy.
- Reduce TAT for:
- Account opening
- Fund payout
- Query resolution
- Monitor complaint ratio and escalation metrics.
7. Team & Leadership Management
- Lead:
- Operations team
- Risk team
- Compliance team
- Back office
- Customer support
- Define KPIs for each department.
- Build second-line leadership.
KPIs / Performance Metrics
- Zero major regulatory penalties
- Cost-to-income ratio improvement
- Revenue growth % YoY
- Client retention rate
- Complaint-to-client ratio
- RMS breaches reduction
- Automation efficiency index
Required Qualifications
- MBA / CA / CFA preferred
- 10–18 years in capital markets
- Minimum 5 years in senior operations role in:
- Stock broking firm
- Clearing member
- Wealth management firm
Mandatory Experience
- Deep understanding of:
- Exchange compliance
- Broker net worth requirements
- Margin framework (Peak margin rules)
- Risk containment measures
- Experience handling exchange audits.
- Familiarity with:
- Algo trading ecosystem
- Franchise broking models
- Digital onboarding platforms
