Chemonics International is conducting a recruit for a Sr. Manager, New Business for Growth Division. The new business senior manager provides mid-level management of the new business strategy and staff development efforts in a specific Business Unit (BU). The senior manager performs multiple high-level roles as needed for business development. The senior manager supports the development of the BU’s new business strategy and staff development efforts. The senior manager shares internal resources and liaises with technical practices to coordinate technical inputs and review of proposals. The senior manager supports resourcing for the BU’s business development, manages new business team members, serves in line roles on proposals, liaises with technical practices to coordinate technical inputs and proposal reviews, collaborates with external clients, shares internal and external knowledge with others on complex matters, and ensures adherence with company policies and applicable laws and regulations. The senior manager may serve as acting new business director, including for extended periods of time, as needed. Responsibilities:
Market Strategy Development Management and Portfolio Management
- Supports management of the forward market of potential biddable opportunities in assigned BU.
- Initiates and develops effective working relationships with clients, counterparts, stakeholders, partners, technical specialists, and donor agencies.
- Identifies and develops new business leads, clearly identifying Chemonics’ role in current international development acquisition and assistance programs and trends.
- Takes initiative to identify business opportunities, efficiencies, and cost savings for the BU.
- Proactively identifies risk, develops plans and strategies to address, and advises leadership on steps to lessen impact or mitigate those risks.
- Identifies opportunities for knowledge- and solution-sharing across the company and takes initiative to build staff and corporate capacity.
- Externally promotes Chemonics by attending events, networking with clients, and displaying a clear understanding of the past and present portfolio and corporate history.
- Travels to conduct information-gathering regarding new business efforts, including meeting with clients, potential partners, and stakeholders (including government counterparts), and other donors; informs decision-makers regarding proposal strategy based on trip findings.
- May dedicate time to other workstreams and functions to achieve BU goals, including operations, project management, and technical practice contributions.
New Business Development
- Takes initiative to support new business efforts, including assuming capture and live proposal roles and building expertise to assume increasing levels of leadership roles on proposals, including as technical writer, proposal lead, cost preparer, subcontractor liaison, coordinator, mentor, and reviewer, or other roles as needed.
- Screens potential partners and makes engagement recommendations to the new business director and/or proposal lead.
- Develops and manages complex proposal strategies in collaboration with senior vice president, proposal leadership, and new business director to optimize profitability and win rate.
Technical
- Contributes technical knowledge to new business efforts.
- Actively engages in technical practice of relevance to areas of interest or focus, sharing information and best practices learned with the company.
Management and Leadership
- Collaborates with BU operations team to properly resource proposal teams.
- Leads and supports budgeting, operating expense management, backlog targets, and forecasting.
- Oversees management of new business consultants, including timesheet management and ensuring payment processing.
- Learns and promotes strategies for effective teamwork and leadership development and cultivates collaborative working relationships across the company and within the team.
- Supervises, mentors, develops, and evaluates assigned staff; mentors new managers; provides regular performance feedback and the time and opportunity to grow professionally.
- Demonstrates inclusive behaviors and leadership consistent with Chemonics’ values and leadership competencies.
- Provides organizational, planning, and management support to outside facilitators; facilitates meetings, trainings, strategy sessions, and other events.
- Serves as acting new business director and performs other duties as required.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; Master’s degree preferred
- Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience; staff supervisory and mentorship experience required
- Thorough understanding of client requirements
- Experience writing proposal or report sections
- Demonstrated leadership on a proposal team
- Demonstrated experience multitasking with attention to detail, organization, and time management skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrated resourcefulness in problem-solving and initiative to learn new skills
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
- Previous experience working in international development and/or living or conducting work in developing countries preferred
- Willingness to travel up to 8 weeks per year
- Language proficiency for assigned geographic area preferred
- Demonstrated leadership, versatility and integrity
- Demonstrates knowledge of artificial intelligence concepts and tools, with the ability to apply them appropriately and responsibly to support efficiency, decision‑making, and problem solving in a dynamic business environment
