Position Description: The Junior Web Developer on the Product Engineering team will engage in both front and backend development activities, directly addressing tech issues and resolving bugs and adding features, pages, and other improvements across the curriculum, marketing, and CMS platforms. This role involves collaborating with the product team to convert designs, mock-ups, or detailed plans into fully functioning features. The Junior Web Developer will also play a crucial role in developing automated tests to ensure system reliability and maintain brand consistency. Further responsibilities include enhancing code quality through detailed documentation and resolving bugs, keeping abreast of the latest technological trends, and promoting best practices in usability. This position is essential for impacting our educational tools and experiences.

Junior Developer Responsibilities

  • Work closely with a Lead Software Engineer, Designer, and Product Owner to build and maintain user-facing web features using HTML, CSS, and React on the frontend.
  • Participate in agile sprints, contributing to planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives
  • Implement features based on mock-ups, wireframes, or clear written requirements
  • Help troubleshoot and fix bugs with support from the team
  • Write clean, accessible, and maintainable code following established patterns and design systems
  • Learn backend technologies (e.g., Lambda-based APIs, Node.js, DynamoDB, PostgreSQL) and contribute to backend tasks over time
  • Support automated testing and documentation to ensure quality and maintainability
  • Stay current with web development trends and usability best practices
  • Take feedback and mentorship to grow into greater technical ownership over time
  • Perform other duties as needed to support product and team goals

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or a related field) or equivalent experience and skill preferred
  • Knowledge of and proven application of base front-end web technologies, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Understanding of cross-browser, cross-platform, and cross-device compatibility standards and behaviors
  • Good working knowledge of relational data models
  • Basic knowledge of writing automated unit and integration tests
  • Basic knowledge of databases and operating systems
  • Understanding of modern web accessibility standards including WCAG and ADA compliance
  • Ability to learn new software and technologies quickly
  • Ability to follow instructions and work in a team environment
  • Experience creating prototypes and wireframes using Figma and other related tools
