About the role

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Summary/Objective:

The Director of Technical Services indirectly oversees all quality assurance operations to ensure products are manufactured to meet specifications. This position will directly lead and direct the centralized Laboratory functions, responsible for mix optimization, material source validations, as well as R&D of new and existing product offerings. Additionally, the Director of Technical Services provides support and analysis of field issues related to QC.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provide strategic leadership and direction for Technical Services across the organization, ensuring alignment with company objectives and long-term performance goals. 
  2. Establish, implement, maintain, and continuously elevate the Chaney standard of technical performance, ensuring consistency across all operations, products, and locations.
  3. Develop and maintain visibility and reporting to leadership on key technical performance indicators, including but not limited to quality trends, performance optimization, product cost, and mix design usage.
  4. Lead the management and resolution of significant or systemic quality issues, ensuring root cause analysis, corrective action, and prevention strategies are implemented consistently.
  5. Direct and oversee research and development efforts of new products and sustainable offerings. 
  6. Manage and oversee new technical initiatives, projects, and product launches.
  7. Serve as the primary point of accountability for vendor relationships within Technical Services, ensuring consistency in communication, performance expectations, and technical alignment across suppliers.
  8. Oversee and manage technical data, systems, and reporting infrastructure to ensure accurate, actionable insights are available to leadership and operational teams.
  9. Provide guidance and subject matter expertise to Technical Services, Operations, Sales, and Customer Service teams regarding mix selection, quality standards, and performance expectations.
  10. Monitor and evaluate technical performance across the organization, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce cost, and enhance product quality and consistency.
  11. Oversee outsourced technical services and third-party providers to ensure compliance with Chaney standards and performance expectations.
  12. Support and promote training and development initiatives to elevate technical knowledge and execution across the organization.
  13. Maintain and manage departmental budgets and resources.
  14. Remain current on industry best practices, technology, and innovation, ensuring Chaney remains competitive and forward-thinking in technical capabilities.
  15. Maintain and enhance an environment of open, honest communication and transparency to assure positive employee morale and productivity.
  16. Advise appropriate production and sales personnel on problems involving quality control and testing techniques, methods, and application of design specifications to concrete product.
  17. Exhibit competence and be innovative in developing performance-based mix designs. 
  18. Assist Customer Service, Operations and Sales as needed for various projects.
  19. Other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Work Environment:

  • Work time will be split between indoors/office and outdoors/field 
  • Exposure to dust and fumes/offensive smells.
  • Exposure to chemicals such as concrete, chemical admixtures.
  • Close proximity to moving mechanical parts.
  • Noise level will be moderate to loud.

Physical Demands:

  • Lift a maximum weight of 50 lbs., repetitively lift 50 lbs., carry approximately 50 lbs., and push/pull approximately 75-100 lbs.
  • Reach overhead and reach away from the body. Minimal kneeling, squatting, and climbing may be required.
  • Sit 4 hours per day, stand 3 hours per day, and walk 3 hours per day.

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

  • Quality Control experience in ready-mix concrete or aggregates (10 years minimum).
  • Prior managerial or supervisory experience.

Special Skills:

  • Written communication, verbal communication, and advanced mathematical skills.
  • Ability to use a computer and iPad, including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Able to exhibit a high level of confidentiality.
  • Must have proven effective leadership, training, and motivation skills.
  • Must have strong organizational skills with the ability to see the big picture.
  • Must be able to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner. 
  • Must be able to gather, interpret and analyze information skillfully. 

Certifications:

  • Valid Drivers License.
  • ACI Level 1 certification.
  • Professional Engineer License (PE) preferred.

Industry Related Experience or Skills:

  • Background in concrete operations, construction, mining operations or building materials (preferred).

Education Required: College/Undergrad (Chemical or Civil Engineering preferred)

Preferred Education: College/Undergrad degree

Bilingual in Spanish Preferred: Yes
