Role Description

The University of York’s School for Business and Society (SBS) is seeking an academic leader for the newly created position of Chair in Adult Social Care Research. In the last decade, our social care research has gone from strength to strength, holding national leadership of both the NIHR School for Social Care Research (SSCR) and the NIHR Research Support Service (RSS) Specialist Centre in Social Care.

As a Research Chair, you will join the dynamic OSCAR Group, working alongside an interdisciplinary team of economists, law scholars, and health scientists to tackle complex societal problems and safeguard our future as a centre of excellence.

The Role

  • Research Leadership: Provide clear direction for high-quality research and drive strategic growth in response to rising investment in the field.
  • Capacity Building: Mentor and support early and mid-career researchers to ensure the future of the discipline.
  • Funding & Impact: Lead the capture of significant research funding and produce original outputs that influence social care policy and practice.
  • Strategic Contribution: Shape the research and teaching strategies for the School, Faculty, and University.

Key Requirements

We are looking for an academic with an outstanding record of internationally relevant research.

  • PhD in a relevant subject area or equivalent experience.
  • Substantial knowledge of NIHR and UKRI funding agendas in social care.
  • A proven track record of sustained research funding and high-quality publications.
  • Experience in senior-level management, including staff development and postgraduate supervision
  • A strong personal commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Expertise in an NIHR portfolio as applied to aging. (Desirable )
  • Knowledge of the NIHR School for Social Care Research and Research Support Service. (Desirable )
