Description

The Project Engineer (or PE) assists in the planning, set-up, administration, management, and close-out of construction projects. This is a growth and skills- development position where individuals are expected to learn and grasp essential project management skills and apply their efforts to support project management and field teams as assigned. Basic duties include cost estimating; bidding and purchasing; document control; information tracking and documentation; cost control and management; scheduling; safety program compliance; quality assurance and control; field production monitoring; punch lists and close-out; and other project support needs.

The Project Engineer position is comprised of three advancement levels (PE I, II and III). Each level represents a progression in skills and knowledge about the construction process and how to effectively manage multiple, concurrent issues and tasks to achieve successful project outcomes.

 MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS

  • Works with (or may be assigned to) the Estimating Department to prepare project cost estimates. Performs quantity take-offs, obtains subcontractor and vendor cost input, prepares cost summaries, and performs data analytics, as directed.
  • Assists Project Managers in subcontractor and vendor purchasing, including preparation of bid packages, bidding follow-up, bid analysis, post-bid interviews and subcontractor/vendor award recommendations.
  • Assists Project Managers in securing governmental and regulatory agency approvals
  • Interacts with Design Professionals and the Owner, as directed.
  • Prepares and maintains construction schedules. Assists with pull-planning work sessions, look-ahead schedules, and weekly work plans.
  • Assists with project safety program implementation including safety orientations, safety inspections and safety documentation tracking. 
  • Tracks and manages subcontractor submittals. Reviews submittals for compliance with Construction Documents. Follows-up and resolves submittal review issues.
  • Tracks and manages Requests for Information (RFI’s). Follows-up and resolves RFI issues.
  • Tracks and logs project documentation including design documents, submittals, reports, photographs, and other information as directed by the Project Manager or Superintendent.
  • Assists Project Managers with budget control and cost management, as assigned. 
  • Assists with implementation of Company programs and processes including Safety, Quality Control, Diversity, Lean Construction, and others.
  • Assists Superintendents with tracking and monitoring of self-performed work activities.
  • Assists Superintendents with field management including site set-up and security, equipment tracking and utilization, field documentation, regulatory agency inspections, and subcontractor work coordination.
  • Assists Project Managers in preparing applications for payment.
  • Manages project close-out issues including punch lists, record-set drawings and submittals, warranties, Certificates of Occupancy, and other documentation
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities, as required

Requirements

  • Willingness and the ability to perform duties in different work settings (such as the Corporate Office, job site office, in the field, and on the road, when necessary).
  • Frequent physical movement in the office and in the field including walking, climbing and standing. Position may also require prolonged periods of sitting behind a desk or computer workstation.
  • When assigned to a job site, exposure to uneven terrain, variable temperatures and environmental conditions, noise, and controlled safety hazards may be present.
  • Ability to work productively with individuals at all departments and levels within CG Schmidt as well as customers, design professionals, subcontractors, vendors, and other external entities.

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in process in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management or academic/experiential equivalent
  • Current driver’s license.
