Catholic Charities of Baltimore, Weinberg Housing and Resource Center is currently seeking a Program Assistant who delivers compassionate, client-centered support by fostering a welcoming and respectful environment where individuals feel valued, informed, and connected. They respond effectively to client needs and emergencies while building trust, upholding dignity, and promoting overall well-being and stability. The role also ensures safe, inclusive, and well-coordinated operations through clear communication, accurate documentation, adherence to procedures, and collaboration with staff, volunteers, and partners. The work schedule is Saturday, Sunday and Holidays 11PM - 7 AM. 

Weinberg Housing and Resource Center is a low-barrier emergency shelter that provides homeless services to over 275 adult men and women each night in the City of Baltimore. Our services include shelter, convalescent care, breakfast and dinner, showers, laundry, case management and a variety of life skills and empowerment classes – with a focused goal of assisting residents in obtaining permanent housing.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Provides client-centered support and services in a welcoming, respectful, and professional manner, ensuring clients feel valued, supported, and connected to appropriate resources.
  • Promotes a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment that upholds dignity and respect, resulting in a positive, inclusive experience for all clients, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Follows program guidelines and procedures, documents activities accurately, and communicates information in a timely and transparent manner, ensuring consistency, accountability, and continuity of services.
  • Assists with the orientation of residents and volunteers, providing clear guidance and ongoing support to ensure understanding of services, expectations, and available resources, leading to increased engagement and participation.
  • Engages respectfully with clients and volunteers through active listening and professional communication, fostering trust, rapport, and a sense of belonging.
  • Maintains accurate and timely records of services and client interactions, ensuring documentation supports quality service delivery, compliance, and informed decision-making.
  • Informs residents of available services, rights, and the grievance process, providing supportive guidance to ensure clients are empowered, informed, and able to advocate for their needs.
  • Observes the environment and communicates concerns promptly, supporting a safe, stable, and responsive setting that prioritizes client and staff well-being.
  • Responds to emergencies calmly and professionally, providing immediate support, reassurance, and basic first aid as appropriate, ensuring client safety and coordination of additional care as needed.
  • De-escalates situations with clients in a professional and supportive manner with a focus on the clients overall well-being.
  • Collaborates with staff, volunteers, and partners to deliver coordinated, client-centered services, including facilitating connections to additional resources to ensure continuity of care and comprehensive support.
  • Provides client-centered assistance with essential services (meals, clothing, laundry, hygiene), ensuring services are delivered with dignity, responsiveness, and attention to individual needs, contributing to overall client well-being.
  • Supports clients in maintaining safe, clean, and stable living spaces, identifying needs for additional support and communicating with staff to ensure timely intervention and improved living conditions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Employees working in the following program(s) have additional responsibilities and/or requirements in addition to the others listed.  These include, but are not limited to: 

WHRC – Kitchen

  • Prepares and serves nutritionally balanced meals that support the health and well-being of clients at the Weinberg Housing and Resource Center, ensuring consistent quality and service standards.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and welcoming kitchen environment that promotes client health and a positive dining experience.
  • Monitors and accurately records food temperatures to maintain meal quality and consistency.
  • Receives, organizes, and stores donated food and kitchen supplies, maintaining accurate records to support effective resource use.
  • Manages inventory and stocks kitchen and storage areas to ensure supplies are available to meet daily client service needs.
  • Collaborates with staff and volunteers to coordinate efficient meal preparation and service in a team-oriented, client-focused environment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • One year of related experience, preferably working with the homeless or at-risk populations.
  • Knowledge of basic personal care, housekeeping, and related support practices, with the ability to apply this knowledge to maintain clean, safe, and supportive environments for clients.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE: 

  • Certified in CPR and/or First Aid within six months of employment and maintained thereafter.
  • ServSafe® within six months of employment and maintained thereafter.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES: 

  • Demonstrates accountability by consistently being punctual and maintaining reliable attendance.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills by effectively engaging with individuals of diverse personalities and needs, maintaining a courteous, patient, and professional demeanor, and providing compassionate, respectful, and responsive support that fosters positive relationships and promotes dignity and positive client outcomes.
  • Ability to intervene and de-escalate conflict between two or more individuals in a calm, respectful, and professional manner, promoting safety and constructive resolution.
  • Maintains a safe environment for clients and co-workers by following established safety protocols, promptly addressing hazards, and promoting a culture of accountability to ensure the well-being of all individuals in the workplace.
  • Ability to use, or willingness to learn computer systems and software, necessary to perform the duties of the position. This includes, but is not limited to, basic computer skills, web browsing, online training, and email usage.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

  • No remote or hybrid work availability based on core and essential functions of the position.
  • Adjusting or moving objects up to 50 pounds in all directions, which may include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or repositioning items as necessary to perform job duties.
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, ramps, poles, or other similar structures as required to perform job tasks.
  • Engaging in communication with others to exchange information, which may involve speaking, listening, writing, or using electronic communication methods to ensure clear and effective understanding. This includes both verbal and non-verbal interactions with colleagues, clients, or external parties.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, which may involve standing or sitting for extended periods, as required to complete tasks or duties associated with the role.
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces.
  • Hearing and vision abilities, with or without correction, sufficient to drive safely and effectively observe and communicate with others.
  • May involve working in various outdoor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and high winds. Employees may be exposed to these elements for extended periods. Protective gear such as waterproof clothing, warm layers, or wind-resistant apparel will be necessary to ensure comfort and safety while performing job duties in inclement weather
