About the role

Responsibilities include continuous improvement and optimization of combustion and calcination as well as optimization of resources. Performs heat and mass balances to optimize the lime making process and identify opportunities for process improvements. Performs root cause analyses to determine most appropriate corrective actions. Actively engages plant management and hourly workforce to ensure alignment with all plant maintenance and operational departments for execution of assigned responsibilities. Develops strong interpersonal relationships and constructively works across organizational boundaries to resolve production and process barriers. Proactive leader in safety, understanding and following rules and policy. Other duties as assigned by management. 

Job Duties   

  • Managing the process capabilities of the vertical lime kilns and other material handling systems on site, maintaining a good quality product and efficient processes.
  • Monitoring, tracking, and continuous improvement of the stone feed system, calcining process, lime quality, and accuracy of all inputs to production, stone, fuels, additives, post-production packaging, etc.
  • Refractory brick management
  • Building strong relationships with all groups within the site, region and company to ensure seamless communication and productivity.
  • Accurate reporting of production, performance, and downtime for the kiln process.
  • Ensuring environmental regulatory compliance in the kiln operation.
  • Ensuring a safe work environment in the execution of all duties and activities.
  • Identify and eliminate production bottlenecks
  • Provide technical support to production, maintenance, environmental, and quality.
  • Support the Regional Reliability Engineer to monitor reliability of the processes and define paybacks for improvements
  • Perform inspections during major outages of refractory, instrumentation and document with reports. 
  • Document problems related to the process or systems as seen or received from production. Reviews results with plant team to initiate, recommend, provide and/or implement solutions.
  • Conduct process and energy audits to identify opportunities for cost savings.
  • Monitor stone quality, size and gradation, and their impact in product quality.
  • Prepare and maintain Standard Operating Procedures and manuals.
  • Train operational personnel on kiln process.
  • Monitor environmental regulatory equipment to ensure compliance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Kiln efficiency, production, reliability, and variable cost
  • Compliance with environmental requirements for the kiln processes.
  • Compliance with quality specifications
  • Effective implementation of procedures and activities.
  • Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering, Minerals Processing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Strong knowledge of the heat and material balances, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and manufacturing equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of science to include chemistry, physics, combustion and thermodynamics.
  • Experience in Root Cause Analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Preferred experience with PowerBI
  • Preferred experience with VBA, Python, or other coding languages
  • Qualified candidates will exhibit a positive and proactive attitude with high initiative and the ability to perform with minimal supervision.
  • Able and willing to spend the majority of time in the plant with the operators, maintenance personnel, and contractors; and able to communicate production and process plans effectively.
  • Able to do limited travel to other sites and regions as needed.
  • Good technical aptitude and analytical skills.
  • Detail and process oriented with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to support a continuous improvement environment as well as support change management initiatives.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
