JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective

The Safety and Compliance Coordinator is responsible for ensuring company operations throughout California remain compliant with all applicable state and federal safety, regulatory, and HR compliance requirements. This role support Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs), landfills, and organics operations within recycling facilities. The Coordinator will travel extensively through California to conduct site audits, support field leadership, implement safety programs (including LOTO and fall protection), and maintain audit-ready documentation at all times. This is a hands-on, field-focused role that partners closely with operations, safety, and HR teams to drive a strong culture of safety and compliance. This position will also support payroll processing and provide general administrative support to ensure continuity of site operations.

Essential Functions

Compliance Oversight: 

  • Ensure all assigned facilities comply with California regulations including CAL/OSHA, OSHA, and applicable state and federal safety standards.
  • Monitor compliance with safety programs such as Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), fall protection, hazard communication, and machine guarding.
  • Conduct routine site inspections and compliance audits and identify gaps or risks.
  • Partner with facility leadership to develop and implement corrective action plans.

Safety Coordination & Incident Management:

  • Collaborate with safety and operations teams to track, investigate, and document incidents, near misses and corrective actions
  • Assist in accident investigations and ensure timely and accurate reporting
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce risk and improve overall site safety performance

Training & Audit Readiness: 

  • Assist with the coordination and delivery of safety training programs
  • Ensure facilities are audit-ready at all times through regular reviews and documentation checks
  • Support field leadership during internal and external audits

HR Compliance Support:

  • Assist with performance tracking and compliance-related HR measures
  • Support adherence to company policies, ethical standards, and employment regulations
  • Collaborate with HR and operations leadership to ensure consistent application of compliance practices

 

Payroll & Administrative Support

  • Serve as support to ensure payroll is processed accurately and in accordance with company timelines and policies
  • Assist with timekeeping review, corrections, and payroll documentation
  • Provide general administrative support, including filing, record maintenance, employee documentation processing, and other office duties as needed to support site operations

Document & Records Management:

  • Maintain safety training records, compliance binders, and digital files to ensure 100% accuracy and completeness
  • Ensure all data entry into safety and compliance software systems are accurate and up to date
  • Track required certifications, training renewals, and regulatory documentation

Field Collaboration & Support:

  • Travel up to 60% throughout California to visit MRFs, landfills, and organics facilities
  • Partner with field managers and site leadership to assess operations and provide hands-on compliance support
  • Serve as a visible safety and compliance resource in the field

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility, but works closely with facility leadership, safety teams, and HR to influence compliance and safety outcomes.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to industrial and outdoor environments including MRFs, landfills, and organic processing facilities. The role frequently involves exposure to moving mechanical parts, heavy equipment, dust, fumes, uneven surfaces, and varying weather conditions. Noise levels can be loud in operational areas.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. The hours of work are Monday through Friday with occasional weekend work as needed, 40 hours+ per week depending on the needs of the business. Occasional evening work may be required as job duties demand.

Travel

Travel up to 60% may be expected for this position.

Required Education and Experience

Experience in safety and compliance processes required
Knowledge of California safety regulations and workplace compliance preferred
Strong organizational and communication skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Bilingual in Spanish is required

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree or experience in related field
