About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a full-time Health and Safety Specialist to join our dynamic People Culture & Performance team Supporting our Ontario Operations. The work of the Health and Safety Specialist is integral to Canadian Blood Services' role as Canada's Lifeline. In this role, you will be responsible for the development and implementation of a CBS' National and/or local Health and Safety initiatives including supporting a dedicated region within our operation. We are looking to you to have experience and knowledge in the following areas: Occupational Health and Safety and risk mitigation practices, solid understanding of applicable OHS laws and regulations and how to read, interpret and apply them to the workplace, an understanding of the workers' compensation process works, OH&S training, Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems in particular CSA Z45001. Assignment of program area and proportions of time to dedicate to areas will vary for individual positions in different areas of specialization. The Associate Director Employee Safety and Wellbeing will assign areas of specialization. Key responsibilities include: Accountability for Employee Safety: To partner with operations consult, advise and support Canadian Blood Service people leaders and employees. Evaluate risk through a risk assessment process, partner with the business and leadership to understand the operational needs and work through identifying reasonable solutions that meet regulatory requirements and industry best practices to prevent harm to employees and other persons. Provide active support as a primary resource for management and staff when Occupational Provincial Enforcement agencies are involved (i.e, Ministry of Labour, etc.). Taking an active role in any serious or critical incident to conduct investigations and identify corrective/preventative action and work with the team and operations to implement sustainable solutions if and where identified for correction Develop employee health and safety training as required in collaboration with Employee safety and wellbeing team. Perform regular onsite visits at collection centres, warehouses, labs and production sites in collaboration with operational stakeholders. Identify opportunities for sustainable improvement and risk mitigation Provide expertise on ergonomic issues and promote effective prevention programs to minimize risks in the workplace. Review, analyze and make recommendations for improvements: Develop recommendations to prevent the occurrence of workplace injuries and illness as identified through our Risk Lens and/or through incident trend analysis. Work with key operational partners to identify areas that may harm CBS employees and collaborate cross functionally to develop and implement solutions. Act in a manner that protects the integrity of CBS while in the course of daily duties. Other Responsibilities: Responds to emergency incidents at any CBS location that may include occurrences that occur outside of normal workday hours. Develop and maintain healthy working relationships with internal local and corporate departments and lines of business including other members of Employee Safety and Well-being team which is comprised of OHS, WCB Case management, Wellbeing team and People Culture Performance Perform other related duties as required.
