Core Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain reporting systems across ERP, CRM, LMS and other business systems.
- Write advanced SQL queries, stored procedures, views, and data logic to support reporting, analysis, and operational decision-making.
- Build, maintain, and optimise data pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, and automated data workflows to consolidate data from multiple systems into trusted reporting outputs.
- Collaborate with Data Analytics, IT, and business stakeholders to improve data quality, business rules, system integration, and reporting reliability.
- Develop and manage structured datasets, reporting tables, and transformation logic to support scalable business intelligence and reporting needs.
- Build interactive dashboards and reporting layers in Power BI and other visualisation tools for different stakeholder groups.
- Create embedded reporting interfaces within internal systems using dashboard containers and UI frameworks such as AdminLTE or similar web-based reporting structures.
- Integrate and consolidate data from multiple source systems while ensuring data quality, consistency, reliability, and governance.
- Develop user-based reporting access structures so stakeholders can view only the data relevant to their function, team, or level.
- Support report system architecture, data flow design, data modelling, and reporting governance across operational and academic systems.
- Automate recurring reporting processes, data preparation workflows, and system reporting tasks using SQL, Python, or related tools.
- Ensure compliance with institutional data governance policies and South African regulations such as POPIA.
- Implement data validation, monitoring, and error-handling mechanisms within pipelines and reporting processes.
- Troubleshoot and resolve data discrepancies, integration failures, and reporting inconsistencies across systems.
- Document data pipelines, reporting logic, data definitions, and system integrations for maintainability and audit purposes.
- Collaborate with academic and administrative stakeholders to translate business requirements into reporting and data solutions.
- Support statutory and regulatory reporting requirements (e.g., HEMIS, DHET submissions).
- Monitor performance of reporting systems and optimise queries, pipelines, and dashboards for efficiency and scalability.
- Participate in system upgrades, testing, and deployment of new reporting or integration features.
Compulsory Skills
- Strong understanding of data governance, data quality frameworks, and compliance (e.g., POPIA).
- Ability to interpret business requirements and translate them into technical data solutions.
- Experience with performance tuning and optimisation of large datasets and reporting queries.
- Understanding of role-based access control (RBAC) and data security in reporting environments.
- Advanced SQL, including joins, CTEs, subqueries, window functions, views, stored procedures, and performance optimisation
- Strong understanding of data engineering principles, including ETL/ELT, data pipelines, data transformation, and data integration
- Experience building and maintaining structured datasets for reporting, dashboards, and business analysis
- Strong data visualisation and dashboard design capability
- Experience working with integrated reporting across multiple systems and platforms
- Ability to create report logic, user access views, and role-based dashboards
- Strong understanding of reporting architecture, data flow mapping, and business logic design
- Experience with web-based reporting interfaces or dashboard embedding inside systems
- Strong analytical thinking, troubleshooting ability, and problem-solving capability
Added Advantage
- Python for automation, scripting, data transformation, and report-support workflows
- Experience with AdminLTE or similar dashboard containers/frameworks
- Knowledge of database design, data warehousing, and reporting-layer optimisation
- Exposure to API-based integrations and system-to-system data extraction
- Exposure to CRM, LMS, call-centre, or student-management data environments
- Microsoft Power BI, SQL, Python, or Data Engineering certifications
- Experience with Higher Education reporting frameworks (e.g., HEMIS, DHET, SAQA).
- Familiarity with Student Information Systems (e.g., ITS, Colleague) and Learning Management Systems (e.g., Moodle).
- Experience with cloud-based data platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS) or modern data stack tools.
- Exposure to data warehousing concepts (star schema, dimensional modelling).
- Experience with version control (e.g., Git) and deployment pipelines for reporting or data solutions.
Minimum Years of Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Business Intelligence, Data Pipeline and Reporting, Systems Reporting, or a related field
- Practical experience in building or supporting data pipelines, automated workflows, or reporting architecture is compulsory
- Experience supporting enterprise or cross-functional reporting environments is compulsory
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, Business Analytics or related experience.
