Bureau of Indian Standards or BIS, formerly known as Indian Standards Institution (ISI), established on 23 December 1986, under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, headquartered in New Delhi. It has 25 members drawn from Central or State Governments, industry, scientific and research institutions, and consumer organizations. It has regional offices in Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Delhi. BIS has a training institute named National Institute of Training for Standardization (NITS), located in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The training institute offers Training Programme for Industry, Developing Countries and for its employees. Bureau of Indian Standards represents India in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the World Standards Service Network (WSSN).
