Position Title: Weekend Conservatory Assistant  

Department:              Horticulture

Reports to:             Manger of Horticulture

FLSA Status: Part-time, Permanent, Non-exempt

Compensation:         $28 per hour

Schedule: Saturday and Sunday 6 hours per day 12 hours per week

 

Position Description: 

The weekend Conservatory assistant at Brooklyn Botanic Garden is responsible for watering and assisting with the upkeep and cleanliness of work areas, Conservatory displays, the bonsai collection, and the nursery. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform basic care of the Conservatory collection.
  • Inspect collections to identify pest problems using integrated pest management (IPM) techniques and reports back to full-time gardener.
  • Operate and maintain hand- and power-gardening tools and small equipment. Make necessary operating adjustments to equipment; report need for repair and replacement.
  • Adhere to the policies of the Horticulture department and Brooklyn Botanic Garden. 
  • Perform various tasks for general grounds and Conservatory care and Brooklyn Botanic Garden events. 
  • Perform other related duties or special projects as directed.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Two years’ college study and/or associate degree in the field of horticulture; three years’ full-time, paid experience working; or satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to work independently and with a team
  • Knowledge of greenhouse management practices and procedures
  • Understanding of varying water requirements for different plants
  • Knowledge of plant diseases, pests, and control methods
  • Working knowledge of the tools and equipment used in conservatory and greenhouse operations and maintenance, including computerized environmental systems
  • Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to pass written examination and/or practical test
  • Ability to obtain and maintain pesticide apprentice certification.
