Team and role overview

  • BII is investing in Southeast Asia with a specific focus on climate change-related opportunities and we are building a small team of infrastructure investment specialists in Singapore. This role is focused on energy transition and decarbonisation investment opportunities in the region. This is an exciting time to join as Sustainability and Climate Finance is high on the agenda for BII in our 2022-26 strategy and the team is leading on the geographical expansion. The selected candidate would play a key role in supporting BII in establishing its investment footprint in the region.
  • There are 5 job levels – Associate, Executive, Manager, Director & the MD/ Team Head. However, the team is very flat and people at all levels are involved in the real detail, and in representational work, both to Investment Committee and externally. The Associate will support the work of the Infrastructure & Climate team in origination, evaluation and execution of transactions and portfolio monitoring. This will include research and strategy work, initial assessment of new opportunities, financial modelling, valuation analysis, due diligence, and portfolio management activities, as required, as well as assisting and liaising with other relevant transaction support teams (Legal, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), Business Integrity and Development Impact).
  • The selected candidate will work closely with BII executives across Asia and London for infrastructure opportunities in Southeast Asia that meet BII’s commercial and development impact criteria, across products including equity, mezzanine, debt, as well as fund investments/intermediated structures in partnership with other GPs.
  • We do the hardest work in the most complex markets. Be prepared to test your skills, get creative and contribute your piece as you take on high-profile work as part of a diverse team of exceptionally smart, passionate people.
  • The role is based in BII’s Singapore office and may entail travel to Southeast Asia, India, and other geographies as required.

Responsibilities

Evaluation and execution of new investment proposals:

  • Assessing investment proposals for deals that fit within BII’s developmental and investment mandate.
  • Analysing financial information relating to specific projects or companies.
  • Building or analysing equity, mezzanine and/or debt financial models and conducting sensitivity analysis.
  • Assisting with reports to be presented to investment committee for approval and participating in the meetings.
  • Conducting detailed valuations on projects or companies using various methods.
  • Assisting with due diligence on a specific company, sector, and country. This will include potential due diligence visits.
  • Supporting senior team members in the structuring and negotiation of key transaction terms and legal documents, including attending in-person meetings.

Portfolio Monitoring:

  • Preparing periodic reports and working with the deal teams to help in the monitoring of investees’ financial and strategic performance.
  • Updating internal systems such as eFront as required.

Market intelligence research, business development:

  • Undertaking research into regions, countries, and specific sectors on an ad-hoc basis. This will include providing support to sector mapping exercises.
  • Undertaking research relating to specific businesses or projects including traveling to meet management teams and advisers.
  • Keeping up to date with market developments and monitoring factors that can affect the markets and considering how these might affect the pipeline and portfolio companies.
  • Monitoring the financial news and updating the team of material information in the target countries, sector and companies.

The Candidate

Background

  • Successful candidates will have relevant prior foundational work experience ideally within investment banking, advisory, project development, private equity or consulting in the infrastructure space, and strong solid grounding in fundamental financial modelling, excel, analytical and research skills and experience in valuation, and a university degree in a relevant field (e.g., economics, finance, corporate finance, accounting, engineering).
  • Exposure to renewable energy finance or project development, especially in Southeast Asia is a plus.
  • Strong financial analysis skills and ability to analyse a company’s financial statements and make commercial assessments, strong financial modelling, excel, and research skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects across products and sectors while working to deadlines and managing time effectively.
  • Good business communication and presentation skills.

  • As a member of a small team, a flexible and “hands on” approach is a prerequisite;

  • Candidates should be strongly motivated by BII’s development mission and ideally demonstrate some commitment to development or social goals through previous executive or non-executive activity.
