Reports To: Director of Early Childhood
Salary Range: $28.00 - $32.97; plus benefits
Position Overview:
The Head Teacher is responsible for upholding the philosophy and mission of the Branford Family Resource Center (FRC) and Branford Public Schools Early Childhood Department. The Head Teacher plans, implements, and supervises developmentally appropriate learning experiences for the FRC Pre-K classroom in alignment with the Connecticut Preschool Curriculum Framework (CT PCF), Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards (ELDS), and other state-approved curriculum resources.
The Head Teacher provides instructional leadership within the classroom, supervises assistant teachers, ensures compliance with NAEYC standards and district requirements, and maintains strong communication with families and community partners to support school readiness and student success.
Key Responsibilities:
Instructional Planning and Implementation
- Plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning activities for the FRC Pre-K classroom.
- Align curriculum with the Connecticut Preschool Curriculum Framework (CT PCF), Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards (ELDS), and approved Pre-K curriculum resources.
- Utilize CT-DOTS to monitor and track student progress.
- Complete required assessments, as necessary
- Develop and implement individualized educational plans in partnership with families.
- Create a classroom environment that reflects best practices in early childhood education and maintains NAEYC standards.
Supervision and Team Leadership
- Supervise Assistant Teachers in the preschool program.
- Model appropriate behavior, language, classroom management strategies, and instructional techniques.
- Delegate tasks and responsibilities to Assistant Teachers and provide constructive feedback.
- Facilitate weekly FRC team meetings and ensure follow-up on action steps.
- Maintain consistent communication with the Director of Early Childhood, and the Early Childhood Business Supervisor, regarding program updates, concerns, and next steps.
Family Engagement and Communication
- Meet with families twice per year to review student progress and develop educational plans.
- Maintain regular communication with families via email, ParentSquare, newsletters, and conferences.
- Send monthly newsletters informing families of classroom learning experiences and important events.
- Share pertinent information with the Director in a timely manner.
Compliance, Documentation, and Collaboration
- Complete all required documentation for Branford Public Schools and the FRC, including:
- Daily child reports
- Child assessments
- Accident and incident reports
- Required checklists and compliance documentation
- Maintain classroom emergency binders, including up-to-date emergency contact and medication forms.
- Maintain and update the classroom NAEYC portfolio.
- Collaborate with the Early Years Center and attend Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings as needed to support shared students.
- Attend professional development workshops and conferences in early childhood education.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or related field required, with a minimum of twelve (12) credits in Early Childhood Education.
- Experience working with preschool-aged children, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of early childhood development and developmentally appropriate instructional practices.
- Ability to be patient, creative, flexible, and responsive when working with young children and families from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to manage and positively guide groups of children using developmentally appropriate discipline techniques.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with parents, staff, and community partners.
- Ability to maintain a classroom environment that reflects the integrity and mission of the FRC program.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.

The employee is regularly required to stand, sit, kneel/squat, bend/stoop, and actively engage with young children at floor level. The position may require lifting and carrying children or classroom materials. The employee must be able to maintain a safe and active classroom environment.
