About the role

Overview:

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a senior leader responsible for ensuring operational excellence across Boys & Girls Clubs of Bend (BGCB). Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the COO will oversee facilities, safety, finance, program execution, and community partnerships. This role is designed for a dynamic leader who aspires to grow into the CEO position, ensuring continuity of vision and impact for BGCB’s mission to empower youth and strengthen families in Central Oregon.

Responsibilities:

Leadership & People Strategy:

  • Provide strong people leadership, cultivating a culture of collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Oversee departmental training and development, while delegating day-to-day HR operations to a dedicated HR leader.
  • Serve as a thought partner to the CEO.

Operations & Safety:

  • Direct oversight of facilities, fleet, and safety systems.
  • Act as a liaison to the Safety Committee, embedding best practices across all Clubs.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and risk management protocols.
  • Oversee member management systems and operational technology infrastructure.

Finance & Resource Allocation:

  • Manage and allocate resources within the COO’s operational portfolio, holding budget authority for those areas, while the CEO retains overall organizational budget authority.
  • Partner with the CEO and Board to align financial decisions with strategic priorities.
  • Drive efficiency and sustainability in operational systems.

Programmatic Strategy & Execution:

  • Integrate programmatic strategy and execution across youth development initiatives, ensuring alignment with BGCB’s mission.
  • Oversee youth and club membership programs, ensuring high-quality experiences for all members.
  • Strengthen partnerships with schools, principals, and teachers to expand outreach and impact.
  • Provide oversight of BGCB’s relationship with High Desert Education Service District (HDESD).

Volunteer Program Oversight:

  • Direct volunteer program operations, including recruitment, training, and tracking.
  • Ensure volunteers are integrated into program delivery and organizational culture.

Community & Strategic Partnerships:

  • Build and sustain relationships with key partners, including Shadow Project and Sylvan, to enhance program offerings.
  • Represent BGCB in community forums, strengthening visibility and credibility.
  • Collaborate with local leaders and stakeholders to advance BGCB’s strategic vision.

Board Engagement:

  • Partner with board committees, to ensure alignment between operations and governance.
  • Provide transparent reporting and strategic updates to the Board of Directors.
Qualifications:
  • Proven ability to build and lead large, diverse teams, with direct management experience overseeing 10+ staff across multiple departments, ideally within nonprofit or youth-serving organizations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial management, including direct ownership of a large, complex operating budget, and resource allocation across multiple operational domains.
  • Strong background in facilities, fleet, and safety management.
  • Established knowledge in creating and executing programmatic strategy, particularly in youth development and membership programs.
  • Experience cultivating relationships with schools, educators, and community partners.
  • Background in volunteer program oversight, including training and tracking systems.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills.
