Description
General Function:
The Assistant Camp Director supports the Summer Camp Director in the daily management and leadership of Camp Hogan. This position helps ensure that camp programs run smoothly, staff are supported, and campers are safe, engaged, and thriving. The Assistant Camp Director will lead staff in creating a positive camp environment, assist with administrative tasks, manage camper behavior when necessary, and serve as a key communication link between staff, families, and leadership.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Summer Camp Director in daily operations of Camp Hogan
- Support and coach camp staff in implementing activities, schedules, and camper engagement
- Help manage and oversee camper behavior, providing immediate support to counselors as needed
- Assist with daily camper check-in, check-out, and ensure proper supervision of all campers
- Serve as a point of contact for camper families, including delivering updates and addressing concerns (looping in Camp Director as needed)
- Ensure that camp rules, policies, and expectations are being followed by both staff and campers
- Support in resolving conflicts among campers and/or staff using restorative approaches
- Ensure incident reports are completed properly and communicated to the Camp Director
- Model and promote a fun, safe, and inclusive camp environment
Expectations:
- Independently perform duties as assigned
- Act as a responsible, positive, and enthusiastic role model for staff and campers
- Lead and actively participate in a variety of camp activities including sports, swimming, arts & crafts, nature exploration, and teambuilding
- Foster maximum participation and engagement by all campers
- Maintain a high standard of professionalism, communication, and teamwork
- Attend all staff training prior to the start of camp (June 9th to 13th) and support in the training of various topics using expertise.
Requirements
- Experience in youth development, education, recreation, or a related field
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to manage and coach a diverse group of staff and campers
- Familiarity with behavior management techniques, including restorative practices
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, outdoor environment and adapt to daily challenges
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willing to obtain before camp starts)
- Experience with Boys & Girls Club programming or a similar youth-serving organization is a plus
