About the role

We have been using a disciplined approach to compensation since the start. We believe this is the only way to create a consistent, strategic, and equitable compensation structure. That in turn unlocks healthy growth for our organization. We build our range with benchmarking data for the particular role from Pave.com - because Pave hooks into HRIS, they have the most accurate data for early-stage companies. We decide any given hire's offer based on three factors: first among them, expected performance in the role (based on performance in the interview process and proximity of experience); as well as seniority (amount of relevant experience); and location (different cost of living). Overview Application We started Boulton & Watt as the perhaps slowest startup studio, building one company at a time with a focus on quality over speed. Our first company, Moxie, is on a tear, helping hundreds of nurses turn into entrepreneurs by helping them launch, run, and grow their own medspa. We’re in the midst of building company #2 (Meadow) and eager to keep that momentum going. We’re hiring for a Chief of Staff to Dan and Sam at the studio-level, and embedded in the startups they are leading as CEOs. You’re a leverager to help us run our companies faster and better: Make sure the right tactical things get done: keep us focused and on track, handle company admin/finance tasks, email replies, etc. Help us execute excellently: manage operating cadence incl. where we need to spend more or less time; set and hold to priorities for the week; help deal with distractions to minimize churn against those priorities; own planning. Turn one-time decisions into repeatable action: help land the right answer together once, then drive the second through hundredth time we’re doing any given thing. Frame and drive answers to open-ended questions Figure out new domains, e.g. state regulation, ability to sell a product, adjust pricing, etc. Structure important projects for the business and drive execution with the team. Help us grow the studio: As new company work starts, industry background research Help us grow our network of talent. We’re looking for: High cognitive flexibility. Sharp, versatile problem solver. Curious to figure out new questions. Proactive ownership. You like to execute. Fast and effective. Hands-on, excited to dig into problems. Grit. Ability to handle high-stakes situations, recover quickly from challenges, and maintain performance under ambiguity. EQ. Navigate interpersonal dynamics, manage conflict, and communicate well. Great backgrounds can vary. Minimum 4-6 years in startups, consulting, or finance/investing could give you a great foundation. Some work will be below your capabilities, and some will stretch your experience. That’s the stretch that will get you ready to take a leadership role or start your own business after 2 years. Be hands-on involved in building multiple companies with wide visibility into what it takes to lead and build. Solve a wide range of problems to round out your tool box from strategic to tactical. Work with a team of adults who have started and scaled real companies, and who enjoy the journey of building a company together.
