The Restorative Justice Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the recruitment, maintenance and supervision of volunteer teams who facilitate Restorative Justice processes. The Restorative Justice Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the development and implementation of Restorative Justice practices, to include mediation and Victim Impact classes, within the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, and helps to coordinate and schedule Community Fraud Awareness Training classes. The Volunteer Coordinator works with various populations including victims, offenders, the community, criminal justice agencies, and serves as the liaison between the Sheriff's Office and the Restorative Justice Community.


Position Location and Structure

The Restorative Justice Volunteer Coordinator position operates under the Community Assistance Program within the Operations Division of the Sheriff's Office. The Director of Community Assistance Programs supervises this position.


New employees receive an 80-hour bank of vacation at the time of hire, in addition to 8 hours of both vacation and medical leave accruals each month.

Position Duties

1. Recruit, train, & supervise volunteers.
2. Restorative Justice (RJ) group conference coordination and case management: 

  • Review crime reports referred to the restorative justice process to determine if appropriate for group conferencing.
  • For incidents appropriate for conferencing: contact victim, offender, and parents if an individual is a juvenile, to explain the restorative justice process.  
  • Assess if a restorative justice group conference is suitable for the parties to accept into program & begin the process.  
  • Coordinate facilitators, co-facilitators, referring law enforcement and community representatives to prepare and facilitate conferences.
  • Prepare and deliver all materials needed for each conference.
  • Attend the various meetings and conferences with facilitators as needed. 
  • Deliver a copy of the signed contract to the referring agency.
  • Contact the offender(s) approximately one month before completion date of the contract to review what still needs to be accomplished.
  • Send completion (or non-completion) letters to all victims, offenders, and professional partners within a week after the contract completion date.
3. Maintain a database of all referred RJ & Mediation cases and their status. 
4. Develop & maintain a database of community service and resource options appropriate for adolescents and adults.
5. Record and maintain data for statistical purposes.
6. Maintain knowledge of victim issues and laws through training. 
7. Organize and facilitate monthly volunteer meetings.
8. Provide training and restorative justice updates to law enforcement and the Community through the annual Community Academy.
9. Foster connections with the Restorative Justice Community in Boulder County as well as statewide.
10. Maintain and supervise Victim Impact Classes at the Boulder County Jail.
11. Maintain and supervise the Mediation program. 
12. Maintain knowledge of all areas of the Community Assistance Program.
13. Carry pager and share rotating on-call Supervisor on Duty responsibilities with other Community Assistance Program staff members for on-scene advocacy.
14. Actively participate in supporting the Community Assistance Program both in a general sense and in the absence of the Director.
15. Assist the Community Fraud Awareness Training team with scheduling and coordinating community-based training.  
16. Other duties as assigned. 


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, social work, or related field.
  • Other bachelor’s degree and two years of professional experience in the Restorative Justice field.  
  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license and proof of a clean driving record. 
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check and a polygraph examination. 
  • Bilingual English/Spanish candidates preferred.

  • Must be well organized, detail oriented and have a strong work ethic.        
  • The ability to work and make decisions independently with minimal supervision.  
  • Ability to understand and relate to diverse populations.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, peers, supervisors, representatives of cooperating agencies and the general public.  
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of volunteer management.
  • Basic working knowledge of the Colorado Victims’ Rights Act and Amendments, victim assistance, and the criminal justice system.
  • Technology – entering data, using spreadsheets, Microsoft including TEAMS. 
  • Ability to deal with information in a confidential manner.

Physical Requirements

Primarily sedentary physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 40 pounds; occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing; frequent hand/eye coordination to operate computer keyboard and office equipment; vision for reading, recording and interpreting information; speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and members of the public.
