About Boston Prep
Boston Prep is a college-preparatory charter public district, made up of a single-site middle and high school. In 2026-2027, our community will include 700 students in grades 6-12, over 500 alumni, over 140 faculty members, and hundreds of families. The majority of our students and families reside in Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan, and Hyde Park. As a charter public school, we welcome all students via an impartial public lottery, and hold the same high expectations and ambitions for all of our students, including those with special needs and English language learners.

Position Summary:
The School Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and well-functioning campus environment. This role includes daily cleaning of high-traffic areas during school hours, supporting general building and grounds maintenance, and responding promptly to facility needs as they arise. The Custodian works closely with school leadership and faculty, performs hands-on repairs, and follows a structured daily schedule to ensure operational excellence.
Hours for this position are 8:00am-4:30pm Monday-Friday on site.
Key Responsibilities of the Role:
Janitorial Duties:
- Clean and sanitize staff and student restrooms daily
- Emptying trash and cleaning cafeterias after student breakfast and lunch blocks daily
- Respond promptly to janitorial needs as they arise (spills, graffiti, general cleaning)
- Restock essential supplies (paper towels, toilet paper, soap, school supplies, etc.)
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of common spaces, including the faculty workroom, supply closets, and the laundry room
- Clean exterior areas of trash and debris
Maintenance & Facilities Support:
- Address routine on-site maintenance needs in a timely and effective manner
- Perform basic repairs (e.g., painting, patching) and routine upkeep (e.g., lockers, window shades, keys)
- Support general campus upkeep and appearance
- Assist external vendors and contractors (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, electrical, locksmith, pest control, elevator services) in coordination with the facilities team
- Support the facilities team with inspections as needed (e.g., fire safety systems, sprinkler systems, HVAC, water systems, elevators, etc.)
- Conduct regular building walkthroughs to assess conditions, document issues, and complete necessary repairs
- Ensure furniture and fixtures (e.g., desks, cabinets) are maintained in good working condition
Qualifications:
- Proficient knowledge of cleaning methods, tools, and facility maintenance practices
- Previous janitorial, carpentry, facilities, and/or maintenance experience highly preferred
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently
- Effective communication and teamwork skills
Physical Demands and Work Environmental Factors:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform physical tasks for extended periods
- Capability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $48,192 - $59,676. Final compensation will be based on years of experience. More specific compensation information can be shared upon request.
