About the Company
We are looking for a highly experienced Data Center BMS & Controls Engineer to join our Technology team. With 8–12 years of experience—at least 5 of which in mission-critical data center environments—you will be responsible for the design, engineering, commissioning, and lifecycle management of Building Management Systems (BMS) and DCIM platforms across hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data center facilities.
About the Role
This is a senior technical role requiring deep expertise in data center mechanical and electrical infrastructure controls, uptime resilience, and integration of intelligent monitoring and automation systems. You will serve as a subject matter expert (SME) and lead engineer on high-value, high-availability projects where 24/7 uptime and Tier III/IV compliance are non-negotiable. The role requires travel across India atleast 70% of the time.
Responsibilities
- Data Center BMS Design & Engineering
- Design and engineer BMS/BAS architecture for Tier III and Tier IV data center facilities in accordance with Uptime Institute and TIA-942 standards.
- Develop control philosophies, sequences of operation, and point-of-connection schedules for critical systems including chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, cooling towers, UPS, PDUs, and generators.
- Specify and integrate DCIM (Data Center Infrastructure Management) platforms with BMS for unified monitoring and analytics.
- Engineer redundant and fault-tolerant control architectures to support N+1, 2N, and 2(N+1) infrastructure configurations.
- Prepare detailed engineering deliverables: control schematics, network architecture diagrams, I/O schedules, and functional descriptions.
- Evaluate and select BMS hardware, field devices, sensors, and communication networks appropriate for mission-critical environments.
- Commissioning & Integrated Systems Testing (IST)
- Lead Level 1–5 commissioning activities for BMS and controls systems in alignment with ASHRAE Guideline 1.7 and Uptime Institute requirements.
- Develop and execute Integrated Systems Testing (IST) plans covering concurrent maintainability and fault-tolerance scenarios.
- Perform Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) for all BMS and controls equipment.
- Coordinate BMS commissioning with MEP, structural, and IT/network teams during phased fit-out and live data center operations.
- Manage and document Cx deficiency logs, punch lists, and resolution tracking through to project closeout.
- Critical Systems Integration & DCIM
- Integrate BMS with critical infrastructure including UPS systems, generator management, ATS, PDUs, and precision cooling (CRAC/CRAH, in-row cooling, liquid cooling).
- Interface BMS with DCIM platforms (e.g., Schneider EcoStruxure IT, Nlyte, Vertiv TRELLIS, Sunbird) for unified asset, power, and thermal management.
- Integrate environmental monitoring systems (EMS) for temperature, humidity, airflow, and water leak detection.
- Connect BMS to Power Monitoring Systems (PMS) and IT infrastructure via SNMP, Modbus, BACnet, or REST API.
- Support integration with CMMS (Computerised Maintenance Management Systems) for automated work-order triggering and predictive maintenance.
- Uptime, Availability & Change Management
- Ensure all control system changes comply with data center change management (MOC) procedures and maintenance windows.
- Maintain and enforce BMS configuration management, version control, and backup/restore procedures.
- Develop and test BMS emergency response sequences including automatic failover, load shedding, and generator start/transfer.
- Participate in and support planned maintenance, emergency drills, and business continuity exercises.
- Monitor system alarms, trends, and KPIs; proactively identify and resolve control anomalies before they impact uptime.
- Energy Efficiency & PUE Optimization
- Implement advanced control strategies to optimize Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE).
- Configure and tune economizer modes, airside/waterside free cooling, and variable speed drive (VSD) control sequences.
- Deploy Fault Detection and Diagnostics (FDD) and AI/ML-based analytics for energy waste identification and predictive maintenance.
- Support data center energy reporting in compliance with EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres, ENERGY STAR, and ISO 50001.
- Analyse trending data and recommend control optimizations aligned with PUE targets (typically ≤ 1.3 for hyperscale facilities).
- Cybersecurity & Operational Technology (OT) Security
- Design and implement OT/ICS cybersecurity controls for BMS networks in accordance with NIST SP 800-82, IEC 62443, and data center security policies.
- Enforce network segmentation between BMS/OT systems and IT/corporate networks (air-gapping, DMZ, firewall rules).
- Manage BMS user access controls, audit logging, and privileged access management (PAM) in compliance with ISO 27001 and SOC 2 requirements.
- Conduct vulnerability assessments and support penetration testing of BMS and DCIM platforms.
- Ensure BMS firmware and software patch management programmes are current and documented.
- Documentation, Reporting & Stakeholder Management
- Act as primary BMS technical point of contact for data center clients, operators, and hyperscale tenant representatives.
- Produce and maintain as-built documentation, cause-and-effect matrices, alarm management philosophies, and O&M manuals.
- Report on BMS KPIs including uptime, alarm response times, PUE trends, and system health metrics.
- Deliver operator training programmes and handover documentation to facility management and NOC/SOC teams.
- Coordinate with data center construction and fit-out teams, MEP contractors, and specialist subcontractors.
