POSITION SUMMARY: As an Illustrator at BJU Press, the ideal candidate will play a supporting role on the Art & Design team by producing high-quality illustrations that support instructional clarity and biblical worldview values. Working closely with design teams, the Illustrator I applies foundational drawing, storytelling, and visual interpretation skills to bring content to life. This role supports product development by completing assigned illustrations and growing in their craft, biblical discernment, and collaborative processes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
- create clear, accurate, and effective illustrations that meet the project’s instructional, visual, and biblical worldview objectives
- conduct appropriate research to inform accurate and context-sensitive visuals, particularly for biblical, historical, or cultural content
- apply established style guides and visual standards to align with product expectations
- collaborate with design teams and the Manager, Art to refine visual concepts incorporating appropriate feedback into illustration work
- complete assigned illustrations in a timely manner to support design team schedules and product milestones
- communicate progress, questions, and readiness for review with clarity and professionalism
- demonstrate improvement in illustration quality, efficiency, and ability to handle complex subject matter over time
- contribute to departmental collaboration by participating in critiques, sharing resources, and learning from others

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 0–2 years of professional illustration experience
- Portfolio demonstrating proficiency in drawing, composition, and storytelling
- Foundational understanding of anatomy, perspective, and visual structure
- Experience with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and other industry-standard illustration software
- Eagerness to learn from feedback and collaborate within a creative department
