About the role

About Bharat Digital: Bharat Digital partners with government departments to strengthen, modernise and humanise digital systems that underpin public service delivery and governance in India. The Fellowship is crafted to enable early-career technologists to work on high-impact digital public infrastructure and governance-technology projects. Why join the Fellowship? Work on real-world, mission-critical public-service systems (for example: citizen mobile-apps, welfare-platforms, GIS/remote-sensing infrastructure, AI/data systems for governance). Be placed within a government department (state or central) and contribute meaningfully to public good. Receive mentorship from experts in technology, design, public policy and governance. Gain exposure to how public systems work, how technology enables them, and the unique challenges of delivering tech for large-scale public systems. Fellowship Tracks / Focus Areas: We are accepting applicants across the following domains: Engineering (Full-stack, Front-end, Back-end, Mobile) Data (Data analytics, AI/ML/LLMs, Data visualisation) Product Design (UI/UX, User research, Information design) GIS / Remote-sensing (Satellite imagery, GIS infrastructure planning) Key Responsibilities: Collaborate with a government department or agency on a defined project that uses technology to improve citizen-services, governance effectiveness or infrastructure. Contribute to design, development, deployment and iteration of digital systems from mobile/web apps, backend infrastructure, data pipelines, dashboards, or GIS/remote-sensing modules. Work with cross-functional teams (policy, operations, design, data) to understand the problem and build a solution that is usable, robust, scalable and aligned with public-service objectives. Engage with real users (citizens, government officers) and gather feedback; iterate on solutions accordingly. Document learnings, contribute towards open-source or public-good outputs (where applicable). Participate in orientation, training and mentorship sessions on public-technology systems, governance, and social impact. Eligibility Criteria: Strong technical/design/data/GIS skills in one of the tracks: Engineering, Data Science/AI, Design, GIS. Demonstrable experience (projects, internships, work) is preferred. A problem-solving mindset, commitment to social impact, and an interest in public service / governance. Willingness to be placed in a government department and adapt to the domain of public systems (which may differ from private tech culture). Ability to work full-time for the duration of the fellowship (no major overlapping commitments).
