Summary

This position is under supervision of the Sheriff and located at the Bexar County Communications Center. Under direct supervision, is responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency telephone calls; routes calls to public safety dispatchers or fire dispatchers; operates telecommunication equipment such as Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System, County Integrated Justice System (CIJS), Records Management System (RMS), Computer Telephony 9-1-1 and Mapping System, and hearing impaired teletype; enters subject matter into computer; responds to requests for information; completes various clerical tasks; and performs related duties as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Answers emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the general public and routes calls to public safety agency dispatchers or fire dispatchers 

  • Determines severity of situation based on detailed information gathered from the caller 

  • Enters call subject matter into computer and prioritizes calls for service 

  • Responds to requests for information regarding case numbers, arrival times, citizen addresses and other dispatch information 

  • Researches law enforcement databases to verify information on individuals, such as driver's license validity, existence of protective orders, missing person stolen/recovered vehicle, warrants, vehicle registration and criminal history 

  • Contacts various service/utility agencies and other emergency contacts as directed 

  • Assists training new employees in call-taking procedures, notification of proper personnel, operation of telecommunication equipment, documentation of calls and other related procedures 

  • Performs clerical duties such as making copies of documents and forwarding to the appropriate location 

  • Performs related duties as required 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from High School or a General Education Development (GED) certificate 

  • Skill in operating telecommunication equipment; skill in determining type and seriousness of calls 

  • Skill to type 40 wpm with no more than 7 errors;  Requires recent typing test administered by Workforce Solutions Alamo Career Centers (Please attach a copy of your typing test results to your online application or fax them to (210) 335-2558 by the closing date.)  

  • Ability to remain calm in emergency situations; ability to pay attention to detail, cooperate with others, maintain composure, control anger, and avoid aggressive behavior, even in very difficult situations; ability to accurately enter information into computer system; ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with high energy callers, other public safety agency dispatchers, co-workers, County employees and the general public 

  • Must have a TCOLE Telecommunicator License or successfully pass the TCOLE Telecommunicator Licensing Exam within one (1) year from employment date 

  • Must obtain Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (TLETS) Certification within one (1) year of employment; must secure and maintain access to TLETS 

  • Must pass a psychological and physical exam including a drug screening 

  • Must possess a valid driver's license 

  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office 

  • May be subject to recall 

  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek 

  • Must work weekends and holidays and perform shift work 

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:   

  • Constantly working in indoor conditions; high call volume, fast paced and stressful call center environment 

  • Occasionally moves items weighing up to 10-15 pounds 

  • Occasionally moves about the office 

  • Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information 

  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery 

  • Positions self to perform essential functions 

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position
