Performs responsible skilled clerical work assisting in the operation of the office of the Commissioner of the Revenue. Assists with real estate taxes and the general operations of the office; prepares and maintains files and records; assists the public and does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Commissioner of the Revenue.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists taxpayers in the preparation of forms; answers routine questions concerning laws.
- Studies and compares sales data with current assessment information for the Sales Ratio Study required by the state.
- Updates real estate records due to new construction; organize and audit building permit information.
- Updates real estate information, obtains appropriate information to correct erroneous assessments.
- Prepares mailings for real estate tax relief and land use.
- Maintains mobile home files, mobile home park listing, and mobile home sales tax lists.
- Interprets plats and updates real estate records with new acreage, create parcels, and maintain various other details as necessary.
- Responds to inquiries regarding assessments by phone and in person.
- Assists taxpayers with filing tax relief and land use applications; checks applications for completeness.
- Interprets deeds and wills to accurately update real estate records with new ownership.
- Audit to ensure that cell towers are appropriately assessed by the State or County.
- Helps ensure applicants qualify for various programs administered by the office.
- Receives and generates assessment materials before and after assessments.
- Performs a variety of office tasks.
- Operates a variety of office equipment; processes incoming and outgoing mail.
- Accomplishes all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested by management.
- Participates in employee meetings and training as needed.
- Performs special projects as assigned.
- Meets attendance requirements and maintains the highest level of dependability.
- Consistently demonstrates ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner to meet current needs and reprioritizes work as necessary.
Qualifications
Education / Experience
Any combination of education equivalent to a high school diploma or general education degree (GED). Supplemental business, administration, associate’s degree or equivalent a plus. Two years’ experience and a stable work history are preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of modern office practices and standard office and accounting equipment; ability to prepare and maintain detailed financial records and reports; ability to make arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately; ability to operate standard office, word processing and data entry equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; exceptional customer service assistance techniques; ability to operate standard office equipment and perform light maintenance on equipment. Highly organized with ability to multi-task. Ability to handle a high volume of work and vary assignments with accuracy and attention to detail. Knowledge of the general laws and administration of policies governing real, personal property and State income taxes.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public. Strong quality and service minded. Ability to work cooperatively in a diverse team and/or independently. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
