PURPOSE OF ROLE

As BBC News expands its presence in North America, we’re seeking a dynamic reporter to deliver fast, accurate and engaging breaking news coverage for BBC.com/news and our app. You will be part of a team reporting and writing daily news stories and live blogs on the biggest stories in the US and Canada, from politics and high-profile criminal trials to wildfires and the Academy Awards. We want a self-starter who loves the thrill of breaking news and has a thoughtful and creative approach to finding fresh angles on the biggest stories.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM
This is a unique opportunity to shape how audiences experience breaking news, while upholding the BBC’s editorial excellence and global reputation. Based in Los Angeles, you’ll play a key role in connecting millions of US and global readers to trusted, impartial journalism. You will work under supervising editors based in Washington DC and New York and liaise closely with a senior editor based in LA. You will also collaborate with Digital colleagues in London, Sydney and Singapore on the biggest global stories as part of our 24/7 coverage.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
•    Write standalone news stories, demonstrating versatility and strong editorial judgement across a range of topics relevant to North American and global audiences
•    Deliver fast, engaging live news coverage, with a strong focus on accuracy, clarity, and creativity in tone, pace, and format
•    While you will be expected to cover all kinds of national news, experience reporting on US entertainment and culture, and a contact book in this area, would be a significant bonus
•    Work a flexible schedule, including early and late shifts as well as some weekends, as part of a seven-day digital operation
•    Collaborate with colleagues across time zones, contributing to a dynamic, high-performing newsroom that values initiative, teamwork, and editorial excellence

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
•    Proven journalistic instincts with the ability to respond swiftly to breaking news, producing fast, accurate copy using a variety of sources, including BBC reporting
•    Creative flair for live coverage, with an understanding of its unique demands and a passion for developing innovative, mobile-first storytelling formats
•    Strong editorial judgement and a track record of covering major national and international stories, generating fresh angles and daily coverage ideas
•    Clear, accessible writing style tailored for North American and global audiences, with a commitment to the BBC’s values of accuracy and impartiality
•    Collaborative and adaptable, able to thrive under pressure in a fast-paced newsroom, using social media and audience data to enhance reach and engagement

If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
