About the Team and the Role:
The Battery Pack Engineering and Hardware Pack Engineering team at Ather is responsible for designing high-quality battery components by applying best practices and methods such as DFMEA, DFX, DMAIC, DOE, and statistical tolerance analyses to deliver design definitions for prototype and production batteries.
This role is for a Battery Design Engineer who will own component designs through the entire lifecycle, from authoring detailed requirements and specifications to managing risks, interfaces, and root cause analysis for production and field issues.
Responsibilities:
- Own the design of thermal and safety components, delivering comprehensive CAD models, assembly drawings, and tolerance stacks.
- Mitigate mechanical, electrical, and thermal failure modes by maintaining clean physical and functional component interfaces.
- Validate safety solutions and rework procedures through experimental tests using battery cyclers and thermal chambers.
- Create component-level Design Validation Plans (DVP) and cross-examine validation test results to verify requirement compliance.
- Ensure regulatory and safety compliance with global standards, including UN 38.3, UL, and AIS 156.
- Resolve technical challenges and identify safety failure origins using structured methodologies like 8D, Ishikawa, 5-Why, and Pareto.
- Proactively monitor battery pack health metrics and isolate software or hardware issues through operational data pipelines.
- Champion safety and yield improvements within production runs and spearhead collaborative risk mitigation via DFMEA/PFMEA/DFA.
Experience and Qualifications:
- B.E/B.Tech/M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 1-3 years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in battery systems or automotive hardware
Must Have Competencies:
- Mechanical design, 3D CAD modeling, and performing statistical tolerance stack-up analyses
- Application of failure analysis methods including DFMEA, DFX, DMAIC, and Design of Experiments (DOE)
- Knowledge of global battery safety regulations and standards including UN 38.3, UL, and AIS 156
- Execution of root cause analysis using structured problem-solving tools like 8D, Ishikawa diagrams, 5-Why analysis, and Pareto charts
Good to Have Competencies:
- Thermal management design and managing complex physical, electrical, and thermal interfaces
- Experimental validation and testing using battery cyclers and thermal chambers
- Utilization of data pipelines to monitor battery pack health and analyze performance data
- Risk assessment and failure mode investigation through PFMEA and Design for Assembly (DFA) sessions
