JOB TITLE:                Phlebotomist

 

DEPARTMENT:        Laboratory

 

REPORTS TO:           Section or Shift Leader

 

WORKS CLOSELY WITH:  Medical Technologists, technicians, patients, laboratory section leaders, physicians and various departments within the Health System.

 

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:     The phlebotomist is responsible for receiving, identifying and obtaining blood samples from neonates, infants, toddlers, school age children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients.  The phlebotomist may also process patient samples, perform “Waived” category testing and distribute lab results.  This position involves instructing patients, handling incoming phone calls, properly billing for testing and maintaining lab files.

 

EDUCATION:           High school graduate or GED required.

 

EXPERIENCE:          None required.

 

FLSA:             Non-exempt

 

INFECTION CONTROL CATEGORY:       1 (High Risk)

 

SAFETY FACTORS:            

  1. Subjected to chemicals, acids, sharps and moderate levels of noise.
  2. Requires wearing gloves, mask and eye protection as required.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB:

  1. Requires standing and walking more that 35% but less than 90% of the time
  2. Requires sitting less than 45% of the time.
  3. Requires carrying object weighing up to 10 lbs. less than 35% of the time.
  4. Requires pulling objects weighing up to 50 lbs. and lifting objects weighing up to 100 lbs. less than 35% of the time.
  5. Requires frequent bending to collect blood up to 50% of the time.
  6. Requires feeling less than 50% of the time.
  7. Requires talking more than 35% but less than 75% of the time.
  8. Requires hearing and seeing 100% of the time.
  9. Requires making repetitive motions with wrists, hand and fingers more than 35% but less than 90% of the time.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:

  2. Accurately performs all routine duties specified in departmental procedure manuals with only minimal supervision, as indicated by annual section competency checklists. See Job Specific Competencies for listings of checklists.

  4. Accurately documents and transcribes report data in a neat, legible manner with no more than two clerical errors per evaluation period.

  7. Accurately completes Chemical Hygiene competency on an annual basis.
  8. Maintains a safe work environment and adheres to safety standards established by departmental and Baptist Health Deaconess policy. Makes every effort to correct or report safety hazards and potentially unsafe working conditions.
  9. Develops programs to attain personal goals and participates in educational activities to insure further professional growth.
  10. Maintains and projects positive guest relations skills to Trover visitors, patients, families, vendors and employees.
  11. Communicates a positive image of Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville through personal and telephone contacts with guests and with general public. This includes maintaining the confidentiality of a patient’s medical condition, medical record or any other important information.
  12. Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:

Specified checklists must be completed before a phlebotomist can work independently in the laboratory.  These checklists are also reviewed annually as a means of assuring quality performance.
